NHL:

The NHL handed out over half-a-billion dollars worth of contracts as free agent frenzy began Monday.

Forward Brett Connolly of Prince George has signed a four-year, $14 million contract with the Florida Panthers.

Connolly spent the last three seasons with Washington.

The 27-year-old Connolly had a career-best 22 goals and 46 points in 81 regular-season games in the 2018-19 season.

The Panthers also signed 2-time Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky to a 7-Year Contract

worth a reported $70 million.

The Vancouver Canucks have signed defenceman 29-year-old Tyler Myers to a five-year deal for a reported $30 million.

The Canucks also came to terms with 31-year-old defenceman Jordie Benn on a two-year contract for a reported $4 million.

Former Prince George Spruce Kings forward Jujhar Khaira is staying with Edmonton after signing a two-year deal with the Oilers for a reported total of $2.4 million.

Forward Matt Duchene joined the Nashville Predators after coming to terms on a 7-year contract worth a reported $56 million.

The New York Rangers and 27-year-old sniper Artemi Panarin came to terms on a 7-year, 81.5-million deal.

The Dallas Stars have signed Joe Pavelski to a 3-year, $21 million deal and Corey Perry to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

The Montreal Canadiens tendered a five-year, $42.27-million offer sheet to restricted free agent Sebastian Aho.

The Carolina Hurricanes have decided to match the offer sheet which means Aho will remain with the Hurricanes.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded centre Nazem Kadri, defenceman Calle Rosen and a 2020 third-round pick to the Colorado Avalanche for defenceman Tyson Barrie, forward Alex Kerfoot and a 2020 sixth-round draft pick.

 

NBA:

The Brooklyn Nets made the biggest off-season splash in the NBA by coming to contract terms with Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan.

Durant gets a four-year deal for $164 million, Irving will earn $141 million over four years and Jordan gets $40 million over four years.

Golden State is expected to land All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell on a four-year, $117 million contract.

To create the salary-cap flexibility, the Warriors intend to trade three-time champion Andre Iguodala to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard is expected to meet this week with both the LA Clippers and LA Lakers but according to reports will give the Toronto Raptors a chance to make the final pitch.

The Raptors are the only team that can offer the 28-year-old Leonard a max contract worth $190 million over five years.

Leonard averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 playoff games.

The Roughriders first win in three games while the Argos slip to 0-2.

The 0-3 B.C. Lions, coming off Saturday’s 36-32 loss in Calgary, play their next game Saturday in Toronto.

The Argos have been outscored 96-21 in their first two games.

TENNIS:

In a first-round match for the ages, 15-year-old Coco Gauff beat 39-year-old Venus Williams 6-4, 6-4 at Wimbledon.

Gauff is the youngest player to qualify at the All England Club in the professional era.

Venus, at 39, was the oldest woman in the field.

Canadian Milos Raonic, the men’s 15th seed, won his first-round match at Wimbledon in straight sets.

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard is out after losing her opener in three sets.

 

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP SOCCER: (In France)

The Americans will play for gold. The U.S. women’s soccer team beat England 2-1 at the World Cup in France giving them a berth in Sunday’s final (8 AM PT) against the winner of Wednesday’s game (noon PT) between the Netherlands and Sweden.

England will play in the third-place game Saturday (8 AM PT).

MLB:

LA Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs has died at age 27.

According to police, Skaggs was with the team in Texas when he was found unresponsive in his hotel room.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No foul play is suspected and an investigation is ongoing.

Skaggs last pitched on Saturday.

He posted a 7-7 record this year in 15 starts, recording a 4.29 ERA with 78 strikeouts in 79 ⅔ innings.

JUDO:

Tami Goto of the Prince George Judo Club captured a pair of medals at the Canada Cup judo meet in Montreal.

Goto earned silver in her Under-18 48-kilogram class and followed that up with a bronze in the U-21 division.

Koen Heitman of the Hart Judo Academy took a bronze in the U-18 73-kilogram division.

 

PG SENIOR LACROSSE:

The best-of-three PG Senior Lacrosse semi-finals start this week (with all games at 8:00 PM).

(9-7) Northland Nissan Assault will battle the (8-8) Lumberjacks Wednesday in Mackenzie, July 8th at Kin 1 and if needed, July 10th at Kin 1.

(15-1) Westwood Pub Devils will face the (7-9) RPR Mechanical/JR Construction Bandits on Thursday plus July 9th and if necessary, 11th at Kin 1.

Winners meet in the best-of-five final on July 16th, 18th, 22nd and if needed, 24th and 25th.
