RCMP looking for witnesses to fatal weekend crash

Police are looking for witnesses and dash cam footage after a crash on Highway 97 claimed the lives of two people over the weekend.

Near 4:30 pm on Sunday afternoon, RCMP received multiple reports of a collision between a commercial transport truck and a passenger vehicle approximately 10 kilometres north of Bear Lake.

The driver and one passenger of the vehicle died in the collision and the remaining person was transported by air ambulance to the hospital.

Corporal Mike Halskov, Media Relations Officer for Traffic Services, said the highway was closed for 11 hours because Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service had to attend from Fort St. John.

“They have to do a very detailed analysis of the scene to get the best possible evidence.”

He said road conditions and weather were both good at the time of the incident, and the area was in a posted 100 km/h zone.

“There were witnesses to the file, and the truck driver is one as well. We have a good idea of what happened, but it takes time for these to come together,” said Halskov.

“We’d be grateful for any information people have if they haven’t already spoken to police.”
