NHL:

Brett Connolly of Prince George says he had two substantial offers on the table from NHL teams, one from Florida and the other from Edmonton.

The 27-year-old went with a “gut decision” and chose the Panthers who gave him a four-year, $14 million contract.

Connolly spent the last three seasons with Washington.

The former PG and Cariboo Cougar had a career-best 22 goals and 46 points in 81 regular-season games in the 2018-19 season.

As expected, Sebastian Aho is staying in Carolina.

The Hurricanes have decided to match the five-year, $42.27 million offered sheet tendered to Aho by the Montreal Canadiens.

 

SPRUCE KINGS:

The BCHL 2019-20 regular season schedule is out.

The defending champion Prince George Spruce Kings open at home on Friday, Sept. 6th against the Surrey Eagles.

The Spruce Kings play 24 of 27 home games on either Friday or Saturday nights, with two Wednesdays and one on a Sunday.

Another PG Spruce King is head to NCAA as defenceman Jay Keranen commits to the U of Michigan.

 

JUNIOR GOLF

Prince George golfers are five shots from the top entering the second round of the BC Junior Girls and Boys golf championships in Nanoose Bay.

Natasha Kozlowski is tied for 5th out of a field of 33 in the girl’s division with a score of 7-over 78.

Cody Bailey is tied for 14th out of 114 golfers in the boy’s division following a first-day 4-over-75.

Nolan Nicol of 100 Mile House is 111th after starting with a 94.

The 72-hole tournaments conclude Friday.

 

PG SOCCER:

Prince George Youth Soccer hosts the Provincial Boys`B`Cup championships beginning Thursday at the PGYSA Fields and Masich Place Stadium.

The host PG Impact has two teams entered in the Under-13 division and one each in Under-15 and Under-18.

Finals are scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 2:00.

 

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP SOCCER: (In France)

U.S.A.  2  England  1  (Tuesday)

Netherlands  1  Sweden  0   (Today noon PT)

The Americans will play the Netherlands in Sunday’s final (8 AM PT) while England will face Sweden in the third-place game Saturday (8 AM PT).

TENNIS:

Canadians Eugenie Bouchard and Denis Shapovalov are out at Wimbledon after losing in the first-round.

Canadians Milos Raonic, the men’s 15th seed, and Felix Auger-Aliassime have advanced to the third round.

 

NBA:

Two-time NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard is expected to decide this week whether to remain with the Toronto Raptors or join either the LA Clippers or LA Lakers.

The Raptors are the only team that can offer the 28-year-old Leonard a max contract worth $190 million over five years.

Leonard averaged 30.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 24 playoff games.

The 32-54 Jays are 3-2 on a 10-game homestand that continues tonight against the Red Sox.

PG SENIOR LACROSSE:

The best-of-three PG Senior Lacrosse semi-finals are about to hit the floor (with all games at 8:00 PM).

(9-7) Northland Nissan Assault will battle the (8-8) Lumberjacks tonight (Wednesday) in Mackenzie, Monday at Kin 1 and if needed, July 10th at Kin 1.

(15-1) Westwood Pub Devils will face the (7-9) RPR Mechanical/JR Construction Bandits on Thursday and Tuesday and if necessary, 11th at Kin 1.

Winners meet in the best-of-five final on July 16th, 18th, 22nd and if needed, 24th and 25th.

 

CFL:

The 0-3 B.C. Lions play their next game Saturday in Toronto.

The 0-2 Argos have been outscored 96-21 in their first two games.

Week four of the CFL season starts Thursday with 3-0 Hamilton at 0-2 Montreal (4:30 p.m. PT)

JUDO:

Tami Goto of the Prince George Judo Club captured a pair of medals at the Canada Cup judo meet in Montreal.

Goto earned silver in her Under-18 48-kilogram class and followed that up with a bronze in the U-21 division.

Koen Heitman of the Hart Judo Academy took a bronze in the U-18 73-kilogram division.
