Nine elderly residents were left without a home when their long term care facility suddenly closed down before the long weekend.
The Enat retirement home informed Northern Health and residents late Friday afternoon that they would be closing their doors that night.
Erin Collins, a spokesperson for Northern Health, said their licensing department had been working with the owner to work through some concerns due to care and safety of their residents.
“There were options for their continued operation presented but the operator did make the decision to voluntarily close the facility.”
After being informed, Northern Health immediately moved residents to University Hospital of Northern British Columbia for assessment and kept them for the night.
The following day most of the residents were then taken to the Gateway Lodge Long-term Care facility while others were taken home by family.
Collins said right now Northern Health’s primary concern is the residents.
“We are exploring options for their care and we are communicating directly with residents and families where they are in the interim, and their care going forward.”
Multiple attempts were made to contact the owner of the facility but he has not responded.
