HARTLEY’S SPORT SHORTS: Wednesday, August 21st

PG Cougars:

Steve O’Rourke has been named the Prince George Cougars Director of Player Development, a title held last year by Nick Drazenovic.

O’Rourke spent the last three seasons as the Cougars Associate Coach.

He will assist in the development of Cougars players, including signed and listed prospects.

O’Rourke will also have a lead role in developing local players and minor coaches through skills programs and clinics.

The Cougars five-day Training Camp will open Friday night at 6:00 at CN Centre and conclude with the team’s annual Black vs. White intrasquad game Tuesday night at 7:00.


PG Spruce Kings:

The Prince George Spruce Kings Main Training Camp begins Friday at 7:00 PM at the RMCA.

The camp will be divided into 2 teams that will play three times over the three days.

The Schedule is as follows:

Friday (7:00 to 9:00 PM)
Saturday (6:00 to 7:15 PM)
Sunday (10:00 AM to Noon)

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of pre-season games against the Merritt Centennials: Tuesday in Prince George and Friday, August 30th in Merritt.

 

NHL:

The Vancouver Canucks have signed general manager Jim Benning to a three-year contract extension through the 2022-23 season.

Benning, 56, has been the Canucks GM for five years.

The team has missed the playoffs in each of the last four seasons.

MLB:

LA Dodgers  16  Toronto Blue Jays  3

Clayton Kershaw allowed by two homers by Jays rookie Bo Bichette but passed Sandy Koufax for most wins by a Dodgers left-hander.

The (52-76) Jays are 0-1 on a six-game West Coast road trip that continues tonight against the (83-44) LA Dodgers.

The Dodgers are tied with the NY Yankees for the best record in the Majors.

CFL:

The (7-2) Winnipeg Blue Bombers visit the (6-3) Edmonton Eskimos Friday night (6 PM PT) to start week 11 of the CFL season.

The Bombers are without Matt Nichols, who has been placed on the six-game injured list.

He will be re-evaluated in 4-to-6 weeks.

A pair of games are scheduled for Saturday: (3-6) Ottawa at (5-3) Saskatchewan (4 PM) followed by (7-2) Hamilton at (1-8) BC.

The Lions are riding a five-game losing streak.

NFL:

An NFL preseason game will be played Thursday in Winnipeg featuring the Green Bay Packers against the Oakland Raiders.

The Packers have not confirmed whether QB  Aaron Rodgers will play in that exhibition game.

 

Basketball:

The Canadian men’s basketball team beat New Zealand 103-100 in overtime in an exhibition game ahead of the FIBA World Cup.

Canada (4-2 in exhibition games) will play its World Cup opener on Sept. 1 against Australia at (12:30 a.m. PT).

Meanwhile, coach Nick Nurse says reports that Cory Joseph of the Sacramento Kings has withdrawn his participation from Team Canada are “incorrect”.

 

UNBC Timberwolves:

The UNBC Timberwolves start the Canada West men’s soccer regular season on the road this weekend.

The Timberwolves visit UBC Okanagan Heat Friday and Saturday night in Kelowna.

The UNBC men have their home opener on August 30th against Fraser Valley.


Simon Fraser Golf:

Cody Bailey won the Simon Fraser Men’s Open by five shots over Blair Scott at Prince George Golf and Curling Club.

The 18-year-old Bailey posted back-to-back rounds of 66 for a 10-under 132 total, while Scott finished at 137 (rounds of 66 and 71).

Bailey played last week in the Canadian junior boys’ championship in Hartland, N.B., where he missed the 36-hole cut by five strokes.

The Simon Fraser Women’s Open, which was held the previous weekend, was won by Natasha Kozlowski.
