UNBC Timberwolves:

The UNBC Timberwolves, who graduated 10 players last year, open their Canada West men’s soccer regular season in Kelowna with a doubleheader (tonight and Saturday) against the UBC Okanagan Heat.

The Timberwolves are ranked 10th and Heat 11th out of 13th teams in the Canada West men’s soccer preseason coach’s poll.



PG Cougars:

About 70 players will be on hand for the Prince George Cougars Main Training Camp, which will open tonight at 6:00 at CN Centre.

The Cougars five-day Camp will conclude with the team’s annual Black vs. White inter-squad game Tuesday night at 7:00.

PG Spruce Kings:

The Prince George Spruce Kings Main Training Camp begins this evening at 7:00 at the RMCA.

The Camp will be divided into two teams that will play three times over the three days.

The Schedule is as follows:

Tonight (7:00 to 9:00 PM)
Saturday (6:00 to 7:15 PM)
Sunday (10:00 AM to Noon)

The Spruce Kings will play a pair of pre-season games against the Merritt Centennials: Tuesday in Prince George and Friday, August 30th in Merritt.

 

NHL:

According to a media report, forward Brock Boeser is looking for seven-million dollars a year in a new contract.

His agent is seeking a four-year, $28 million deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

Supertrax BMX:

The BMX Canada Northern Lights Nationals will be featured this weekend in Prince George at the Carrie Jane Grey Park.

Racing is scheduled for tonight starting at 6:00, Saturday morning at 11:30 and Sunday morning at 8:00.

Women’s Baseball:

Canada lost 12-3 to Venezuela Thursday in a women’s baseball World Cup qualifier in Mexico.

The Canadian team, which includes Amanda Asay of Prince George, is 3-2 in the eight-team regional tournament.

The top four teams advance to the World Cup.

Canada continues the round-robin today against Puerto Rico today and Mexico Saturday.

On Sunday, the medal games will feature Team 1 vs. 2 for gold and Team 3 vs. 4 for bronze.


MLB:

LA Dodgers  3  Toronto Blue Jays  2

The Dodgers completed the sweep to improve their major-league best record (85-44) and the best home record (51-16) in baseball.

The (52-78) Jays are 0-3 on a six-game West Coast road trip that continues tonight in Seattle against the (54-74) Mariners.

The Mariners are last in the AL West.

NFL: (Exhibition game in Winnipeg)

Oakland Raiders  22  Green Bay Packers  21

Attendance was announced at 21,992.

The Packers decided to sit 33 players, including many starters such as quarterback Aaron Rodgers and running back Aaron Jones.

Rodgers hasn’t played in the pre-season.

The Raiders did not play starters such as quarterback Derek Carr or new receiver Antonio Brown.

The game was played on a field shortened to 80 yards because of concerns over the condition of IG Field.

Tickets prices ranged from $75 to $340 before taxes and fees.


CFL:

Friday night football in the CFL to kick off week 11 has the (7-2) Winnipeg Blue Bombers at the (6-3) Edmonton Eskimos.

The Bombers are without injured starting QB Matt Nichols.

A pair of games are scheduled for Saturday: (3-6) Ottawa at (5-3) Saskatchewan (4 PM) followed by (7-2) Hamilton at (1-8) BC.

The Lions (0-3 at home) are riding a five-game losing streak and are giving up an average of 34 points a game.

Golf:

Defending champion Brooke Henderson is tied for second place entering the second round of the CP Women’s Open in Aurora, Ontario.

Henderson shot an opening-day 6-under 66, leaving her one shot behind Annie Park.
