PG Spruce Kings:

The Prince George Spruce Kings play a pair of pre-season games against the Merritt Centennials, including tonight in Prince George. Tickets are five dollars at the door.

The two teams also meet Friday in Merritt.

The Spruce Kings held three days of Training Camp on the weekend at the RMCA.
The BCHL champions open their regular-season Friday, Sept. 6th at home against the Surrey Eagles.

PG Cougars:

The Prince George Cougars five-day Training Camp concludes with the team’s annual Black vs. White inter-squad game tonight at 7:00 at CN Centre.

The Cougars don’t start their five-game pre-season schedule until Friday, Sept. 6th against Kamloops in Langley.

Former PG Cougars defenceman  Raymond Grewal of Prince George has signed a one-year contract with Manchester Storm (England, UK Elite). Grewal played last season with the UBC Thunderbirds, notching a goal and five assists in 28 games.
Tennis:

Canadian Eugenie Bouchard has been knocked out of the U.S. Open after a first-round 6-3, 6-3 loss to 12th-seed Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia.

In a feature Monday match, Serena Williams crushed Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-1.

Williams stretched her winning streak against Sharapova to 19 matches.

On the men’s side, Roger Federer and top-seeded Novak Djokovic won to advance to the second round.

Federer, a five-time champion, improved to 19-0 in the first round of the U.S. Open.


MLB:

The Toronto Blue Jays have just 29 games left this season, five of them at home this week.

The (53-80) Jays entertain NL East-leading Atlanta tonight and Wednesday plus AL West-leading Houston Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Women’s Baseball:

Amanda Asay of Prince George helped Canada qualify for the 2020 women’s baseball World Cup.

The 31-year-old Asay, a 14-year player on the national team, pitched the win in Canada’s 11-1 victory over host Mexico in the bronze medal game at the World Cup qualifying tournament.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night at 6:00 at Masich Place in their Canada West men’s soccer home opener.

The two teams also play Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in Prince George to complete the doubleheader.

The UNBC men are 1-1 after splitting a pair of 2-1 decisions against UBC Okanagan in Kelowna.

Fraser Valley is 0-2 after falling 2-0 to both UBC and Victoria.

CFL:

The CFL has suspended Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris two games for violating the league’s drug policy.

The 32-year-old Canadian, a three-time CFL all-star, leads the league in rushing this season.

Harris insists he never knowingly took a banned substance.

Week 12 in the CFL begins this long weekend with Winnipeg at Saskatchewan (Sunday at noon PT) followed by Toronto at Hamilton (Monday 10 AM PT) and Edmonton at Calgary (Monday 1:30 PM).

The BC Lions return to action on Friday, Sept. 6th (4:30 PM PT) at Montreal.

The Lions are 1-9 and riding a six-game losing streak.

BC QB Mike Reilly has been sacked 43 times in just 10 games.
