BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings wrapped up their pre-season schedule with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Merritt Centennials last night.

The Spruce Kings defeated Merritt 5-3 at the RMCA on Tuesday.

The regular-season begins for the defending BCHL champions Friday, September 6th when they host the Surrey Eagles.

On that night, the Spruce Kings will be raising their championship banners from their historic run last season.

PG Cougars:

The Prince George Cougars will play five WHL pre-season games, with none of them in the northern capital.

They start exhibition play on Friday, Sept. 6th against the Kamloops Blazers in Langley.

Cariboo Cougars:

The Cariboo Cougars major midget hockey team is hosting the Everett Silvertips midget programs.

After two days of practices, games got underway on Friday with the 4-2 victory over Everett.

Teams will be back in action today at 8:15 a.m. from the Elk Center.

Fastpitch:

The Big Guy Lake Kings are 1-5 at the Sr Men’s National fastpitch championships in Grande Prairie.

The Kings dropped both of their games on Friday, losing 10-9 to the Saskatoon Angels before being blanked by the Oshweken Hill United Chiefs 17-0.

Their next game will come at 2:00 p.m. PST against the East Hants Mastodons.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves had Abou Cisse to thank Friday night.

His goal in the 75th minute brought the Timberwolves even with the Fraser Valley Cascades at 1-1, leading to the eventual draw from Masich Place.

The two teams also play Sunday afternoon at 1:00 in Prince George to complete the doubleheader.

The UNBC men are 1-1-1 while Fraser Valley is 0-2-1.

CFL:

Week 12 in the CFL kicks off on Sunday with Winnipeg at Saskatchewan.

That will be followed up by the Labour Day Classic games on the holiday Monday, kicking off with Toronto at Hamilton. Edmonton at Calgary will then follow.

The BC Lions return to action on Friday, September 6 at Montreal.

The 1-9 Lions are riding a six-game losing streak.

MLB

Astros  7  Blue Jays  4

George Springer’s swing produced some impressive power for the Houston on Friday night in Toronto.

Springer homered and drove in four runs as the Astros beat the Jays, the Astros’ 10th win in 12 games following a five-game losing streak.

Every Astros starter had at least one hit as Houston finished with 13 hits against five pitchers.

Toronto rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. following an at-bat in the seventh inning for arguing balls and strikes.

Houston leads the AL West division with a record of 88-48.

Toronto is 54-82 on the season.

Basketball

The FIBA World Cup is set to tip-off today and Canada has their roster set.

Players of note who have pulled out are Andrew Wiggins, RJ Barrett, Jamal Murray, Tristan Thompson, Dwight Powell, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

In the end, Canada’s roster has two NBA players on it, Cory Joseph (Sacramento) and Khem Birch (Orlando).

Canada will play their first game on Sunday against Australia.

Tennis

Canadian Bianca Andreescu will face Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, the No. 19 seed and former world No. 1, in the third round of the U.S. Open.

Fellow Canuck Denis Shapovalov followed her lead and also advanced to the third round with a 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory over Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland.

Shapovalov will face No. 13 seed Gael Monfils on Saturday.
