UNBC Timberwolves:

The UNBC Timberwolves had a tie and a loss in their Canada West men’s soccer home games against the Fraser Valley Cascades at Masich Place Stadium.

The two teams had a 1-1 draw Friday and Fraser Valley won the Sunday rematch 3-1.

The 1-2-1 UNBC men’s soccer team will play its next games Friday and Saturday night in Victoria against the 2-2 Vikes.

The Timberwolves women’s soccer team starts its season with a home game Thursday at noon against Thompson Rivers at Masich Place Stadium.

Tennis:

19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu beat American Taylor Townsend 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 under the lights in 4th-round action at the US Open.

The 15th seeded Andreescu has advanced to the quarter-final round where she will meet No. 25, Elise Mertens of Belgium, Wednesday night.

Defending women’s champion and top-seeded Naomi Osaka’s is out at the U.S. Open after losing in the 4th-round 7-5, 6-4 to 13th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.

On the men’s side, #2 Rafael Nadal has advanced to the quarters.

 

CFL:

Calgary Stampeders  25  Edmonton Eskimos  9

Calgary has won the last eight Labour Day tilts against Edmonton.

QB Bo Levi Mitchell played his first game since June 29th and completed 19-of-28 pass attempts for 263 yards and a touchdown.

The 6-4 Stampeders and 6-5 Eskimos meet again Saturday in Edmonton.


Hamilton Tiger-Cats  38  Toronto Argonauts  27

The 9-2 Ti-Cats are 6-0 at home and have opened up an eight-point lead over second-place Montreal in the East Division.

The Argos are 1-9.

On Sunday, Saskatchewan beat Winnipeg 19-17 on a last-play field goal.

The two teams meet again Saturday in Winnipeg.

The 8-3 Blue Bombers are two points ahead of the 7-3 Roughriders.

Saskatchewan is riding a six-game win streak.

The 1-9 BC Lions will try to end a six-game losing streak when they visit the 5-4 Montreal Alouettes Friday (4:30 PT) to begin week 13 of the CFL season.

The Lions have fired their offensive line coach Bryan Chiu and replaced him with Kelly Bates.

BC QB Mike Reilly has been sacked 43 times in just 10 games.

Labour Day Classic:

Over 100 runners participated in the 46th annual Labour Day Classic run in Prince George.


Fastpitch:

The Big Guy Lake Kings of Prince George finished with an overall 2-6 record, including 1-5 in the round-robin, at the 2019 Canadian Men’s Fast Pitch Championship in Grande Prairie.

MLB:

Atlanta Braves  6  Toronto Blue Jays  3

Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer for the NL-East leading Braves against his former team.

The (55-84) Jays visit the (85-54) Braves again tonight (4:20 PT) with Atlanta riding a 5-game win streak.

BCHL:

After posting a 5-3 win and a 4-3 shootout loss against the Merritt Centennials in exhibition play last week, the Prince George Spruce Kings are gearing up to start their regular season.

The Spruce Kings will be raising their championship banners prior to their season opener against the Surrey Eagles on Friday at the RMCA.

PG Cougars:

The Prince George Cougars will play five WHL pre-season games, all on the road.

They start exhibition play on Friday against the Kamloops Blazers in Langley.

Basketball:

The Canadian men’s basketball team lost 92-69 today (Tuesday) to No. 7 Lithuania at the FIBA World Cup in China.

Canada is 0-2 after also dropping its opener 108-92 against Australia.

Canada wraps up the preliminary round against 0-2 Senegal on Thursday before travelling to Shanghai for two classification games that could clinch them a spot in a second-chance qualifier.
