Tennis:

Bianca Andreescu will play in her first career Grand Slam semifinal.

The 15th seeded Andreescu came from behind to beat No. 25, Elise Mertens of Belgium 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to become just the third Canadian female in history to reach the US Open semis.

It was the 12th consecutive three-set victory for Andreescu.

The 19-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., will play 13th seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland tonight (about 6:00 PT).

The other women’s semifinal this evening has  #8 Serena Williams against #5 Elina Svitolina.

Andreescu will end up in the top 10 when the new rankings come out Monday.

On the men’s side at the US Open, #2 Rafael Nadal won his quarterfinal in straight sets Wednesday night.

Nadal will play #24 Matteo Berrettini, a 23-year-old from Rome in the semifinals Friday.

The other semi has #5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia vs. 78th-ranked Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.


UNBC Timberwolves:

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team began its Canada West regular season with a 1-0 victory today (Thursday) over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at Masich Place Stadium.

Paige Payne scored the only goal.

The UNBC women host UBCO Heat on Saturday.

The 1-2-1 UNBC men’s soccer team will play the 2-2 Vikes in a doubleheader Friday and Saturday night in Victoria.

PG Cougars:

The Prince George Cougars have signed 18-year-old free agent defenceman Joe Kennedy to a WHL Standard Player Agreement.

Kennedy played the last two seasons at the Junior ‘A’ level in Ontario.

The Cougars start their pre-season with three games this weekend.

They play in Langley on Friday against the Kamloops Blazers and on Saturday vs. the Vancouver Giants.

Prince George will travel to Kelowna to face the Rockets Sunday.

Three Prince George Cougars will compete (Sept 6th-10th) at NHL ProspectTournaments.

Free-agent goalie Taylor Gauthier is with the Boston Bruins rookies in Buffalo, free-agent forward Josh Maser is with the NY Rangers in Traverse City, Michigan and defenceman Cole Moberg is with the Chicago Blackhawks, also in Traverse City.

The Blackhawks selected Moberg in the seventh round of the 2019 Draft.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings will begin defence of their BCHL title when they start their season with a home doubleheader Friday and Saturday against the Surrey Eagles at the RMCA.

The Spruce Kings, who will raise their championship banners prior to puck drop on Friday night, have named Nolan Welsh captain.

NHL:

The Vancouver Canucks have re-signed restricted free agent forward Nikolay Goldobin to a one-year, one-way contract worth $900,000.

In 63 games for the Canucks last season, Goldobin tallied 27 points (including seven goals)

The Arizona Coyotes have signed forward Clayton Keller to an eight-year contract extension.

The deal is for a reported $57.2 million.

 

NFL:

The NFL regular season kicks off tonight (5:20 PT) with the Green Bay Packers at the Chicago Bears.

The Bears are favoured by a field goal.

CFL:

The 1-9 BC Lions will try to end a six-game losing streak when they visit the 5-4 Montreal Alouettes Friday (4:30 PT) to begin week 13 of the CFL season.

The Lions are already 10 points out of a playoff spot with just eight games left.

BC QB Mike Reilly has been sacked 43 times, an average of more than four per game.

The three other CFL games this week will all be played on Saturday: (1-9) Toronto at (3-7) Ottawa (10:00 AM PT) followed by (7-3) Saskatchewan at (8-3) Winnipeg (1:00 PM) and (6-4) Calgary at (6-5) Edmonton (4:00).

MLB:

The Toronto Blue Jays start a four-game series tonight in Tampa Bay.

The (55-85) Jays have lost 12 of their last 15.

The (82-59) Rays are holding down the first wild-card spot in the American League.

Basketball:

The Canadian men’s basketball team beat Senegal 82-60 today (Thursday) to finish group play with a 1-2 record at the FIBA World Cup in China.

Canada will play Jordan Saturday and Germany Monday in the classification round which determines spots 17-32 in the competition.
