Prince George wins its first game of the season (1-1-1) with goals by newcomer Evan Orr, Andrew Seaman, Corey Cunningham (2), Ryan McAllister, and Chong Min Lee.

The Spruce Kings host the Penticton Vees tonight (Saturday).

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars play their final pre-season game this afternoon at 1:00 (PT) in Dawson Creek against the Edmonton Oil Kings.

The Oil Kings won Thursday’s exhibition game between the two teams 6-1.

The Cougars have been outscored 25-5 in their four exhibition games.

The Cats start their regular season on Friday when they host the Vancouver Giants.

The Cougars roster sits at 27, with 18 of those players veterans.

There are three goalies, nine defencemen and 15 forwards battling for a position on the team.

NHL:

The Toronto Maple Leafs and forward Mitch Marner have come to terms on a six-year, $65.358 million contract extension.

The deal carries an average annual value of $10.893 million.

The 22-year-old Marner notched a career-high 94 points, including 26 goals, in 82 games last season.

Connor McDavid’s tender knee passed the first test on the opening of the Edmonton Oilers training camp.

McDavid was cleared for practice and didn’t require a non-contact jersey.

“I feel good,” McDavid told the media.

Winnipeg Jets defenceman and former PG Cougar Dustin Byfuglien has been granted a leave of absence by the team.

The Jets say there is no timeline for Byfuglien’s return and no exact reason has been given for the leave.

 

Canada West Soccer:

UNBC Timberwolves  3  Mount Royal Cougars  2

Hosting the hottest team in Canada West, the UNBC Timberwolves weren’t phased by the undefeated Cougars Friday night at Masich Place.

With goals from PG’s own Owen Stewart, Stu Rowlands, and Anthony Preston, the Timberwolves handed the Cougars their first blemish of the season. UNBC improves to 3-3-1 for the year while MRU now sits at a 5-1 record.

The (2-0) UNBC women’s soccer team visits the (2-0) Saskatchewan Huskies this afternoon and the (1-1) Regina Cougars Sunday afternoon.

PG Spirit Bowl: (exhibition high school football game at Masich Place Stadium)

CFL:

BC Lions  29  Ottawa REDBLACKS  5

The BC Lions (2-10) brought to an end their seven-game losing skid, defeating the REDBLACKS for what is their first home win of the season.

Quarterback Mike Reilly completed 20 of his 29 passing attempts, putting 286 yards through the air and adding two touchdowns. The former league MOP also scored two touchdowns on the ground.

In place of injured running back John White, Brandon Rutley didn’t let the run game skip a beat as he went on to rush for 111 yards off of 20 carries.

The (3-9) REDBLACKS, who have former Lion Jonathon Jennings at QB, have now lost five in a row.

Both teams also meet September 21st in Ottawa.

A couple of CFL games will be played today: Hamilton at Calgary (1 PM PT) followed by Montreal at Saskatchewan (4 PM).

The (58-90) Jays are 3-1 on a six-game homestand following their victory over the Pinstripes.

Bo Bichette’s walk-off home run makes him the youngest player in Blue Jays history to ever complete the feat.

Despite the loss, the (97-52) Yanks continue to post the best record in the Majors.
