The (1-1-2) PG Spruce Kings play their first road game of the season Friday in Chilliwack against the (1-3) Chiefs.

WHL: (Pre-season in Dawson Creek)

Edmonton Oil Kings  2  Prince George Cougars  1   OT  (Saturday)

Jake Neighbours scored 36 seconds into overtime.

In his first pre-season start this month Taylor Gauthier stopped 37 of 39 shots in the PG net.

After going 0-4-1 in the pre-season, the PG Cougars open their regular season with a home double against the defending Western Conference champion Vancouver Giants Friday and Saturday.

NHL:

The Vancouver Canucks split-squad will play the Calgary Flames split-squad tonight with one game in Calgary and the other in Victoria.

The Canucks will host the Edmonton Oilers in an exhibition game Tuesday at Rogers Arena.

According to his agent, Toronto Maple Leafs sniper Mitch Marner received a couple of offer sheets from NHL teams while he was a restricted free agent.

Agent Darren Ferris says Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas was aware of the offers although which teams were involved have not been disclosed.

Marner and the Leafs agreed to a six-year contract with an average annual value of $10.893 million.

The Boston Bruins have signed defenceman Charlie McAvoy to a three-year deal worth $4.9 million per season.


Canada West Women’s Soccer:

UNBC Timberwolves  1  Regina Cougars  1  (Tie-Sunday)

Paige Payne of Kitimat scored the goal for the UNBC women.

Saskatchewan Huskies  3  UNBC Timberwolves  1 (Saturday)

Hannah Emmond’s bicycle kick goal off of a corner kick in the second half wasn’t enough for the Lady Timberwolves.

The (2-1-1) UNBC women’s soccer team will host the (0-2-2) Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday night at 6:00 and the (0-4) Mount Royal Cougars Sunday at noon at Masich Place Stadium.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

UNBC Timberwolves  3  Mount Royal Cougars  2  (Friday)

With goals from PG’s own Owen Stewart, Stu Rowlands, and Anthony Preston, the Timberwolves handed the (5-1) Cougars their first blemish of the season.

The (3-3-1) UNBC men’s soccer team will play its next two games in Edmonton against the Alberta Golden Bears on Saturday afternoon and against the MacEwan Griffins Sunday night afternoon.

NFL: (Sunday night game)

Atlanta Falcons  24  Philadelphia Eagles  20

Both teams are 1-1.

Nine NFL teams are 2-0. They are New England, Buffalo, Baltimore and Kansas City in the AFC plus Dallas, Green Bay, Seattle, San Francisco and the LA Rams in the NFC.

Detroit is unbeaten at 1-0-1.

The eight teams sitting 0-2 are Miami, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Jacksonville and Denver in the AFC plus the New York Giants, Washington and Carolina in the NFC.

Arizona is winless at 0-1-1.

(The Dolphins have been outscored 102-10)

The Monday night game to conclude week two of the NFL season has Cleveland at the New York Jets. Both teams are 0-1.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will have surgery on his right elbow and miss the remainder of the season.

Roethlisberger was injured in the second quarter of Sunday’s 28-26 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is expected to undergo thumb surgery that could sideline him about six weeks.

Brees suffered the injury in the 27-9 loss against the LA Rams.

 

CFL:

Calgary Stampeders  19  Hamilton Tiger-Cats  18  (Saturday)

Tre Roberson blocked a 42-yard field goal attempt by Lirim Hajrullahu with 32 seconds left in the game to preserve the narrow win for the Stampeders.

Saskatchewan Roughriders  27  Montreal Alouettes  25  (Saturday)

Brett Lauther kicked a 39-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining to lift Saskatchewan to victory.

BC Lions  29  Ottawa REDBLACKS  5  (Friday)

The (2-10) Lions ended their seven-game losing skid by posting their first home win of the season.

The same teams meet again Saturday (4 pm PT) in Ottawa.

The (3-9) RedBlacks have lost five in a row.

Week 15 of the CFL season begins with a Friday doubleheader: (8-4) Calgary at (2-9) Toronto (4:00 PT) followed by (9-3) Hamilton at (6-6) Edmonton (6:30 PT).

West-leading (9-3) Winnipeg plays at (6-5) Montreal (Saturday 1:00 PT).

Toronto Blue Jays  6  New York Yankees  4

The (59-91) Jays finished 4-2 on a six-game homestand.

Toronto visits Baltimore Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and will play at the NY Yankees Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Jays will conclude with six at home; Sept 23rd, 24th and 25th against Baltimore and Sept. 27th, 28th and 29th against Tampa Bay.
