Cougars charity golf tournament raises over $75,000

It’s pretty safe to say the eighth annual Prince George Cougars Alumni Charity Golf Tournament was a hole-in-one.

A cheque presentation was made over the weekend at CN Centre where 75-thousand dollars was raised to support the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

Cougars Vice-President of Business Andy Beesley told MyPGNow.com the public response for the yearly event is tremendous.

“What’s even more touching is the fact that so many people support this tournament, it’s sold-out every year, our alumni love coming back and this event provides one of the best feelings we can have throughout the entire season.”

“I don’t think anybody really realized that this was going to turn into such a major and profound fundraiser every year and it really is staggering when you look at the amount of money that’s gone towards healthcare in the north.”

This year’s funds will support the purchase of a cardiac ultrasound machine at University Hospital.

Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation CEO, Judy Neiser said the new piece of equipment is badly needed.

“Prince George for a long time has been in bad need for cardiac equipment and with $558,000 to date, the last four years has been all about cardiac care.”

Neiser also continued to marvel at the community support for this worthwhile cause each and every year.

“I guess what’s really amazing is that the alumni come back to Prince George, these are our hometown heroes, they’ve got fond memories of their young years here playing as a junior team and when they come back, they love to reconnect with the players they played with and the families who hosted them.”

The event has become a staple on the calendar.

“It’s one of our signature events along with the Festival of Trees and Spirit Day are the three key events that we actually do and grant out about $1.75 million per year and so this is a key piece of it,” added Neiser.
