WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars go searching for their first win of the season when they host the (3-1-1) Kelowna Rockets tonight and Saturday.

After two weeks of the WHL season, the Rockets lead the BC Division by a point over Vancouver and Kamloops.

The (0-3-0-1) Cougars will be without three veterans this weekend.

Cole Moberg and Jackson Leppard are expected out 1-2 weeks while Ilijah Colina is still 2-3 weeks from returning.

After four games, the Cougars are 2/19 on the power-play (10.5 %) and 9/13 on the penalty kill (69.2 %).

They have scored seven goals while allowing 14.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

Prince George Spruce Kings  3  West Kelowna Warriors  2

The game was played today (Friday) at the BCHL Showcase in Penticton.

Chong Min Lee snapped a 2-2 tie at 2:48 of the third period for the (4-4-2) Spruce Kings, who will play the Trail Smoke Eaters on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the Showcase.

The Spruce Kings are four points behind the (7-2) Mainland Division leading Coquitlam Express.

BC Major Midget League: 
(Cariboo Cougars)

The (1-0-0-1) Major Midget Cariboo Cougars visit the (1-3) Kootenay Ice in Trail Saturday (4:00 PM) and Sunday (9:45 AM).

NHL: (3 Canadian teams in action, all on the road and all lost)

Brett Connolly of Prince George picked up an assist for Florida in his first game with the Panthers, however, it came in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 0-1 Vancouver Canucks play Saturday in Calgary, the Flames home opener.

There are five Friday games in the NHL, including an early game from Philadelphia (11:00 a.m. PT) with the Flyers against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Elsewhere, Winnipeg at New Jersey, Toronto at Columbus, Washington at NY Islanders and Vegas at San Jose.

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed forward Alex DeBrincat to a three-year, $19.2 million contract extension through the 2022-23 season.

The 21-year-old DeBrincat tied for sixth in the NHL last season with 41 goals. He also added 35 assists for 76 points.

Canada West Women’s Soccer: 

In their final home games of the season, the (3-2-3) UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team will host the (7-0-1) Trinity Western Spartans tonight at 6:00 and the (2-2-4) Fraser Valley Cascades Sunday at noon at Masich Place.

UNBC is fourth out of eight teams in the Pacific Division with six games to go, with four of them on the road.

The top six advance to the playoffs.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team will visit the (6-4) Trinity Western Spartans tonight and Saturday night at 7:15 in Langley.

The (4-5-2) Timberwolves have just four games left and are last out of seven teams in the Pacific Division, with just the top four to advance to the playoffs.

Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped 1.7% this year for its fourth straight decline.

The Toronto Blue Jays had the biggest home attendance drop, falling 575,137 in a season where they finished with a 67-95 record.

 

NFL: (Start of week 5)

Seattle Seahawks  30  LA Rams  29

The Seahawks are 4-1 while the Rams dropped to 3-2.

There are 13 NFL games Sunday including Chicago against Oakland in London, England.

A feature afternoon game has Green Bay at Dallas with both teams 3-1.

Just three teams are unbeaten: New England and Kansas City at 4-0 & San Francisco at 3-0.

Six teams are still searching for a win.

Miami, Cincinnati, Denver and Washington are 0-4, the New York Jets are 0-3 while Arizona is 0-3-1.

CFL:

Week 17 of the CFL season begins tonight (4:00 p.m. PT) with (7-7) Edmonton at (11-3) Hamilton.

The (4-10) BC Lions, who have won three straight, host the (2-11) Toronto Argonauts Saturday night at 7:00.

Other Saturday games have (9-4) Calgary at (7-6) Montreal (1:00 PT) and (9-5) Winnipeg at (9-4) Saskatchewan (4:00).

Just five weekends remain in the CFL regular season.

Tennis:  

Bianca Andreescu’s win streak is over at a WTA Tour season-high 17 matches.

The 19-year-old Canadian lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to world No. 4 Naomi Osaka of Japan in the China Open quarterfinal.

It was also Andreescu’s first loss in nine matches this year against a top-10 opponent.
