Spruce Kings split a pair at BCHL Showcase

It was a mixed bag for the Prince George Spruce Kings down in Penticton.

The defending Fred Page and Doyle Cup champs participated in the BCHL Showcase this weekend where they split a pair of decisions.

On Friday, the Spruce Kings posted a 3-2 victory over the West Kelowna Warriors at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Chong Min Lee scored the winning goal at 2:48 of the third period beating Warriors netminder Brock Baier.

Preston Brodziak and Fin Williams scored on the man advantage, which went 2-for-6 in the game.

Jett Alexander made 19 saves for the win.

Former Cariboo Cougar and local product Brandon Dent lit the lamp for the fifth time this season in defeat for West Kelowna.

The result was a little bit different on Saturday for the Spruce Kings coming out on the wrong side of a 7-4 contest against the Trail Smoke Eaters.

Michael Colella stung the Spruce Kings for the second time in a week, potting a three-goal, two assist effort.

He scored the game winner last Saturday for Trail at the RMCA in a 3-0 win over PG.

Colby Elmer, Kent Johnson, Kyle Budvarson and Owen Ozar potted singles for the Smokies.

PG’s Corey Cunningham scored twice in the loss, while Williams added another.

Jack McGovern was pulled after allowing five goals on just 21 Trail shots.

The Spruce Kings are 4-5-2 on the season, which is good enough for third spot in the Mainland Division.

Coquitlam is tops in that division with an 8-2-0-0 record, six points ahead of Prince George.

A four-game home stand awaits the Spruce Kings beginning Friday and Saturday against the Nanaimo Clippers and Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

Puck drop for both nights is 7pm.
