HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11TH

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars go looking for their first road win of the season when they visit the (3-2-1) Spokane Chiefs tonight.

The (1-4-0-1) Cougars, who are 0-1-0-1 on the road, also play Saturday in Tri-City against the (3-3) Americans.

Prince George will also host Spokane Oct. 18th and 19th.

Cougars defenceman Cole Moberg comes off the injury list and will play tonight.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The (4-5-2) Prince George Spruce Kings begin a four-game homestand as they entertain the (6-3-0-1) Nanaimo Clippers tonight and the (8-2-1) Salmon Arm Silverbacks Saturday.

Prince George is 4th in the Mainland Division, two points behind the (6-6) Langley Rivermen, six back of the (8-2) Coquitlam Express and seven behind the (8-4-0-1) Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Spruce Kings have a new Associate Coach.

Colin Minardi replaces Jessie Leung who stepped down due to personal reasons.

The 28-year-old Minardi had been coaching through the midget ranks in the Okanagan before taking the job with Prince George.

BC Major Midget League:
(Cariboo Cougars)

The (3-0-0-1) Cariboo Cougars visit the (0-3-1) Valley West Giants Saturday (11:15 a.m.) and Sunday (8:30 a.m.) in Abbotsford.

The Major Midget Cougars are in 5th place but have two games in hand on the four teams ahead of them.

NHL:

Vancouver was the only Canadian team that did not play Thursday in the NHL.

Canadian teams went 3-3 as Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg all won, while Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa all lost.

The Oilers are 4-0, tied for the best record in the league with Carolina.

The (1-2) Canucks host the (2-0) Philadelphia Flyers Saturday.

There are three Friday games in the NHL, all involving American teams: Florida at Buffalo, Anaheim at Columbus and NY Islanders at Carolina.

MLB:

American League: (5th and deciding game in the Division Series)

Houston Astros  6  Tampa Bay Rays  1

The Astros win 3-2 to advance to the American League Championship Series against the NY Yankees starting Saturday night (5:08 PT) in Houston.


National League:

The best-of-seven NLDS will begin tonight in St. Louis (5:08 PT) as the Cardinals host the Washington Nationals.

Canada West Women’s Soccer: (UNBC Timberwolves)

This is the second last weekend in the Canada West soccer regular season.

The (3-3-4) UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team will visit the (8-0-2) Calgary Dinos Saturday and Sunday (11 a.m. PT both days).

With four regular-season games left, all on the road, the Timberwolves are 5th out of eight in the Canada West Pacific Division where the top six teams advance to the playoffs.

The UNBC women close at Victoria on Oct. 18th and at UBC on the 19th.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The (4-6-3) UNBC men’s soccer team has two regular-season games left and both are against the (3-5-5) Thompson Rivers WolfPack on October 19th and 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Masich Place.

It does not appear that the Timberwolves will advance to the Canada West playoffs.

The UNBC men are 6th out seven in the Prairie Division, where just the top four move on to the quarterfinals.

NFL: (Week six)

New England Patriots  35  New York Giants  14

Tom Brady ran for two touchdowns and passed for over 300 yards to move ahead of Peyton Manning for second place on the NFL’s all-time passing yards list.

The Patriots remain perfect at 6-0 while the Giants sit at 2-4.

The only other unbeaten team are the 4-0 San Francisco 49’ers.

Teams at 4-1 are Seattle, New Orleans, Green Bay, Kansas City and Buffalo.

Four teams are winless: Cincinnati and Washington at 0-5 plus Miami and the New York Jets at 0-4.

There are a dozen NFL games Sunday including Seattle at Cleveland, Houston at KC, Philadelphia at Minnesota and San Francisco at LA Rams.

CFL: (Week 18)

Just four weekends remain in the CFL regular season.

The (5-10) BC Lions put a four-game win streak on the line when they visit the (7-8) Edmonton Eskimos Saturday (4 p.m. PT).

The Lions need a victory to keep their slim crossover playoff hopes alive.

A key game tonight (6:30 PT) has (10-4) Saskatchewan at (9-5) Calgary.

The Riders lead the West Division by two points over the Stampeders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The (9-6) Blue Bombers host the (8-6) Montreal Alouettes Saturday (1:00 p.m. PT).

The two worst teams in the league meet tonight (4:00 PT) as (3-11) Ottawa visits (2-12) Toronto.
