Babine widow happy with separate inquest

The wife of one of the men killed in the Babine Mill explosion is relieved that a separate inquest will take place.

The BC’s Chief Coroner has decided to look into the circumstances that lead to the 2012 explosions at the Lakeland Mills in Prince George and the one in Burns Lake independently from one another.

Originally, both inquests were to be held at once, in Prince George.

Maureen Luggi is hoping this will give the community the closure it needs.

“I’m just very happy that the Chief Coroner has made the time to listen to the leaders and some representatives of the families,” she says. “I appreciate that she has taken the time to listen to both sides, and that she’s chosen to honour our community, allowing our community to heal from this tragedy.”

Her husband Robert and Carl Charlie were both killed when the mill exploded in January 2012.

Twenty other workers were also injured.

Babine’s inquest is schedule for July in Burns Lake, while the inquest into the Lakeland explosion is set for March in Prince George.
