WHL: (PG Cougars)

Tri-City Americans  4  Prince George Cougars  2

After a strong performance for the majority of the second period, the wheels fell off for the Cougars in the final two minutes of the second frame, coughing up two goals in less than a minute.

Taylor Gauthier stopped 28 of the 32 shots he faced, earning himself third-star honours after the (2-5-0-1) Cougars two-game win streak came to an end.

Prince George will be back in action next Friday when they host Spokane on Oct. 18th and 19th.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The (4-6-2-1) Prince George Spruce Kings dropped their second-straight of a four-game homestand to the Salmon Arm Silverbacks last night.

Prince George will be back in action next Friday against the Chilliwack Chiefs for the first of a back-to-back.

Prince George is 4th in the Mainland Division, one point behind the (6-7) Langley Rivermen, seven back of the (8-5-0-1) Chilliwack Chiefs, and nine back of the (10-2) Coquitlam Express.

The Spruce Kings have a new Associate Coach.

Colin Minardi replaces Jessie Leung who stepped down due to personal reasons.

The 28-year-old Minardi had been coaching through the midget ranks in the Okanagan before taking the job with Prince George.

BC Major Midget League:(Cariboo Cougars)

Cariboo Cougars  4  Valley West Giants  1

The (3-0-0-1) Cariboo Cougars will face the (0-3-1) Valley West Giants again today (8:30 a.m.) in Abbotsford.

The Major Midget Cougars are in 5th place but have two games in hand on the four teams ahead of them.

Max Scherzer followed Aníbal Sánchez’s near no-hitter with a try of his own and the stingy Nats beat the Cards on Saturday for a 2-0 lead in the NL Championship Series.

American League:

Gleyber Torres kept up his October surge with a homer and five RBIs, Masahiro Tanaka polished his playoff resume and the Yanks blanked the Astros Saturday night in the AL Championship Series opener.

Canada West Women’s Soccer: (UNBC Timberwolves)

Calgary Dinos  2  UNBC Timberwolves  0

This is the second last weekend in the Canada West soccer regular season.

The (3-4-4) UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team will look to get back at the (9-0-2) Calgary Dinos today (11 a.m. PT) in Game 2 of their weekend series.

With three regular-season games left, all on the road, the Timberwolves are 5th out of eight in the Canada West Pacific Division where the top six teams advance to the playoffs.

The UNBC women close at Victoria on Oct. 18th and at UBC on the 19th.

Canada West Men’s Soccer:

The (4-6-3) UNBC men’s soccer team has two regular-season games left and both are against the (3-5-5) Thompson Rivers WolfPack on October 19th and 20th at 1:00 p.m. at Masich Place.

It does not appear that the Timberwolves will advance to the Canada West playoffs.

The UNBC men are 6th out seven in the Prairie Division, where just the top four move on to the quarterfinals.

CFL: (Week 18)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers  35  Montreal Alouettes  24

Nick Taylor’s interception for a touchdown was a highlight but the Blue Bombers relied more on a solid ground game to beat the Alouettes on Saturday, getting a little payback after their last meeting when Winnipeg surrendered a 20-point lead.

With Montreal’s loss, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats have clinched top spot in the East Division.

Edmonton Eskimos  19  BC Lions  6

BC Lions quarterback Mike Reilly broke his left wrist in the game against the Edmonton and did not return.

Shaquille Cooper rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown to help Edmonton beat BC on Saturday night, clinching the CFL’s last remaining playoff berth.

As a result, the Lions have been eliminated from playoff contention.

NFL
: (Week six)

There are a dozen NFL games today including Seattle at Cleveland, Houston at KC, Philadelphia at Minnesota and San Francisco at LA Rams.

The (4-0) 49’ers and (6-0) New England Patriots are the only unbeaten teams.

Teams at 4-1 are Seattle, New Orleans, Green Bay, Kansas City and Buffalo.

Four teams are winless: Cincinnati and Washington at 0-5 plus Miami and the New York Jets at 0-4.
