SD 57 will not follow Ontario’s lead when it comes to cellphone ban in classrooms

A cellphone ban will not be coming anytime soon to Prince George classrooms according to School District 57.

The response comes on the heels of a cellphone ban coming into effect today (Monday) in Ontario classrooms where students can only use personal mobile devices for educational purposes.

Board Chair Tim Bennett, told MyPGNow.com cell phone use in local classrooms will continue to be monitored by teachers.

“That will fall back to the teachers as it’s part of the autonomy of their classroom. The school district has a policy over the appropriate use of networks, so that would dictate how a cellphone could be used if it’s connected to our infrastructure.”

He adds it’s more about teaching the students when it’s appropriate to use their cell phones as part of their studies along with when is a good time to put them away.

“It could be considered a distraction in class and it could be used for non-academic activities, but at the same time, our education system does a good job with working with our students to remind them of appropriate times to use their device while also encouraging them to use it to help benefit learning.”
