HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The PG Cougars have three home games in four nights starting this evening against the (10-5-1) Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Cougars are averaging just two goals a game while the Tigers have an average of nearly four goals per game.

Medicine Hat, third in the Central Division, is coming off a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Giants on Sunday.

The (4-11-0-1) Cougars also host the (6-7-1) Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday.

PG goalie Taylor Gauthier, who missed the last three games with a lower-body injury, is expected to be a game-time decision against the Tigers.

Jacob Herman was in net on the weekend for the losses on the road, 6-2 in Kelowna and 6-0 in Spokane.

Goalie Tyler Brennan is competing this week at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Medicine Hat and Swift Current and posted a shutout Tuesday.

The Cougars are last in the Western Conference, four points behind Victoria and (5-7-2-1) Seattle.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The (8-9-2-1) Prince George Spruce Kings visit the (17-4) Coquitlam Express tonight.

Coquitlam leads the overall BCHL standings by a point over Penticton and Salmon Arm.

The Spruce Kings also play at the (7-13-0-2) Surrey Eagles Friday and the (11-7-3-1) Chilliwack Chiefs Saturday.

The next home game for the Spruce Kings will be on Nov. 13th against the Vernon Vipers.

Prince George is in third place in the Mainland Division, three points ahead of Langley and Surrey and seven behind second-place Chilliwack.

BC Major Midget League: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars will be at the North Shore Winter Club this weekend for games against the Vancouver NW Hawks.

Game times are 7:45 p.m. (Saturday) and 10:15 a.m. (Sunday).

The (9-2-0-1) Major Midget Cougars are in 4th place in the 11-team BCMML, but just a point behind the (10-4) Vancouver NE Chiefs and the (10-4) Vancouver NW Hawks with Cariboo holding two games in hand.

NHL: (11 Tuesday games)

St. Louis  2  Vancouver  1  (OT)

Jaden Schwartz scored at 3:28 of overtime converting on a 3-on-0.

Vancouver goalie Jacob Markstrom smashed his stick in anger after the winning goal.

Rookie Quinn Hughes tied the game 1-1 for the Canucks with 3:35 remaining.

The (9-3-3) Canucks still have not lost in regulation on home ice (4-0-2).

Vancouver is second in the Pacific Division, a point behind (10-4-2) Edmonton.

The Canucks visit (4-7-3) Chicago Thursday and (8-7-1) Winnipeg Friday before hosting (4-5-4) New Jersey Sunday.

There are just two NHL games tonight (Wednesday): St. Louis at Edmonton and Detroit at NY Rangers.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves hit the road in Canada West basketball.

The Timberwolves visit the Trinity Western Spartans Friday and Saturday in Langley.

UNBC is 1-1 with the men and 0-2 with the women.

The Spartans are 0-2 in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

Next home games for the Timberwolves will be on Nov. 15th and 16th against the UBC Thunderbirds.

CFL:

Playoffs begin Sunday in the CFL.

Edmonton visits Montreal (10 a.m. PT) in the Eastern semi-final with the winner to play at Hamilton on Nov. 17th.

Winnipeg will be on the road at Calgary (1:30 p.m. PT) in the Western semi-final with the winner to visit Saskatchewan on Nov. 17th.

The 107th Grey Cup will be played in Calgary on Sunday, Nov. 24th.

NFL
:

The Carolina Panthers have placed quarterback Cam Newton on injured reserve, meaning he can’t play for the rest of the regular season.

Newton has been on the sidelines since week two with a foot injury.

Week 10 of the NFL season starts Thursday night at 5:20 (PT) with an AFC West Division battle as the (4-5) LA Chargers visit the (4-4) Oakland Raiders.

NBA:

The (4-2) Toronto Raptors host the (2-5) Sacramento Kings tonight (4:30 p.m. PT).

The Raptors have won all three of their home games.

After hosting Sacramento, Toronto will head out on the road for five starting Friday in New Orleans.
