Skakun opens up about Downtown issues

Prince George City Councillor Brian Skakun says a community meeting focused around downtown issues is long overdue.

City Council made the decision to hold one during last night’s meeting (Monday), where Mayor Lyn Hall stated they are not turning a blind eye to the problem.

When asked about what are the more pressing issues in the downtown core, Skakun responded with this.

“Open drug use and drug sales, the needles that are all over the place are some of the more important issues and even property crime.”

Skakun also believes the local RCMP could do more if pushed in the right direction.

“I think they could be pushed a little bit more, we fund their budget, it’s over 25-million dollars a year and I think they can do more it’s just a matter of how they do it and what priorities are not as important as the downtown and vice versa.”

He adds they continue to pour money and resources into the downtown and it seems that in some ways, the city isn’t getting further ahead.

“I’m just extremely frustrated because things have deteriorated downtown, we have a lot of good things going on but people don’t feel safe and that needs to be addressed.”

The meeting will include downtown businesses, social service providers among other groups who will have the chance to have their say on what’s wrong downtown.

A date for the special meeting hasn’t been set yet.
