Shirley Gratton awarded Medal of Citizenship from BC Government

Former Prince George City Councillor has received the Medal of Good Citizenship from the province.

Shirley Gratton served at City Hall for three-and-a-half terms.

Even though she feels, a lot of ground was covered during her time on council, Gratton believes more could have done when it comes to seniors housing.

“I still feel today that I did not do enough. Seniors housing could be out in the communities, there is something in the Hart, but there could be living quarters for retirees that have no pensions other than just the one.”

“Blackburn or College Heights isn’t too bad and even out in the Ness Lake area, move them around, don’t just stick them downtown. Another thing we need is more lights, it’s very dark in areas like the Hart Highway.”

Gratton also had the opportunity to see major projects like the Aquatic Centre, CN Centre and the PG Civic Centre come to fruition.

“Those were good years, there was money around to build these things and it was important for our community.”

“We also did the hanging baskets on the by-pass for about 20 years too from bridge to bridge. We went out, got sponsors and we got over 130 baskets and worked on the banners.”

Gratton, a long-time volunteer, is the only person from Prince George to receive the award.

She is a member of the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame who was named the 2004 Citizen of the Year and the 2011 Outstanding Volunteer among many accomplishments.

The Medal of Good Citizenship was launched in 2015 to recognize individuals through exceptional long-term service and contributions to their communities without remuneration or reward.
