Hofer and the Winterhawks skunk the Cougars again

For the second time in three games, Joel Hofer and the Portland Winterhawks blanked the Prince George Cougars 3-0.

On Tuesday in  Prince George, Hofer made 23 saves for his third shutout of the season.

On Saturday in Portland before 9,326 fans, Hofer blocked 25 shots for shutout number four in the 2019-20 season.

Hofer is one of 8 WHL and 31 players overall that will attend Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp Monday to Thursday in Oakville, Ont.

Lane Gilliss scored the Teddy Bear toss goal (11,156 Bears) which turned out to be the winner at 7:42 of the first period.

It was the second straight year Gilliss got the Portland Teddy Bear goal.

Reece Newkirk and Simon Knak tallied in the second period for the Winterhawks, who beat the Cougars for the third time in five nights.

Portland won Wednesday’s game at CN Centre 5-4 in overtime.

Taylor Gauthier made 43 saves as Prince George was outshot 46-25, including 18-3 in the third period.

The Cougars have been shutout in five of their last 13 games.

The (19-6-1-2) Winterhawks are tied with the (20-6-1) Everett Silvertips for the U.S. Division lead.

The (6-19-1-2) Cougars have lost four straight and are 12 points behind the (12-11-2-1) Tri-City Americans for the last Western Conference wild-card spot.

Same teams meet again tonight (Sunday) at 5:00 in Portland.
