WHL: (PG Cougars)

Portland Winterhawks  4  Prince George Cougars  1  (Sunday)

The Winterhawks swept the weekend doubleheader in Portland and all four games against the Cougars in a six-day span.

Joel Hofer made 26 saves for the Winterhawks, who outshot the Cats 33-27 before 2,863 fans.

Hofer is one of 8 WHL and 31 players overall that will attend Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp today (Monday) to Thursday in Oakville, Ont.

Tyler Brennan blocked 29 of 32 shots in the Prince George net.

Josh Maser, with his team-high 13th, notched the only PG goal, which briefly tied the game at 1 early in the second period.

Robbie Fromm-Delorme scored the winner at 7:19 of the middle period.

The Cougars have scored one or less goals in 10 of their 29 games (five times they have been shutout and five other times they have scored just once).

The (20-6-1-2) Winterhawks are tied with the (21-6-1) Everett Silvertips for first place in the U.S. Division, although Everett has a game in hand.

The (6-20-1-2) Cougars have lost five straight and are 12 points behind the (12-12-2-1) Tri-City Americans for the last Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George will host the (15-9-2) Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday in its final home games in 2019.

Portland Winterhawks  3  Prince George Cougars  0 
(Saturday)

For the second time in three games, Joel Hofer blanked the Cougars as he blocked 25 shots for his 4th shutout of the season before 9,326 fans in Portland.

On Tuesday in  Prince George, Hofer made 23 saves in a 3-0 victory at CN Centre.

Lane Gilliss scored the Teddy Bear toss goal (11,156 Bears) which turned out to be the winner at 7:42 of the first period.

It was the second straight year Gilliss got the Portland Teddy Bear goal.

Reece Newkirk and Simon Knak tallied in the second period for the Winterhawks, who beat the Cougars for the third time in five nights.

Portland won Wednesday’s game in Prince George 5-4 in overtime.

Taylor Gauthier made 43 saves as PG was outshot 46-25, including 18-3 in the third period.

BC Major Midget League: (Cariboo Cougars)

Thompson Blazers  3  Cariboo Cougars  2  (Saturday)

The (15-5-1-1) Major Midget Cougars are in third place in the 11-team BCMML, a point ahead of
the (15-6-0-1) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Cariboo is off until they visit the South Island Royals Dec. 21st (6:30 p.m.) and 22nd (10:30 a.m.) in Saanich.

BCHL:
(PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings are 0-3 on a five-game homestand that continues Friday and Saturday against the BCHL-leading (28-5) Coquitlam Express.

The (11-18-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, four points behind the (13-16-2-3) Surrey Eagles and five points back of the (15-15-0-1-1) Langley Rivermen.

The Spruce Kings are coming off a pair of losses to the Chilliwack Chiefs, 3-2 Thursday and 5-3 Friday.

NHL: (5 Sunday games)  Canadian teams went 1-0-1

Brett Connolly of Prince George scored his team-high 14th goal of the season for the (15-9-5) Florida Panthers in their 5-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks.

Connolly has 21 points in 29 games.

Vancouver Canucks  6  Buffalo Sabres  5  (Saturday in OT)

The (15-11-4) Vancouver Canucks are 2-1 on a five-game homestand that continues Tuesday against Toronto and wraps up Thursday against Carolina.

Vancouver is tied with Calgary for fourth place in the Pacific Division, a point behind Vegas and two ahead of San Jose.

The Canucks, coming off Saturday’s 6-5 OT victory over Buffalo, have scored at least five goals in 13 of their first 30 games of 2019-20.

There are four NHL games tonight: Calgary at Colorado, Boston at Ottawa, Columbus at Washington and New York Islanders at Tampa Bay.

High School Basketball:

The Duchess Park Condors placed 4th out of 20 teams at the 2019 Sr. Boys Tsumura Basketball Invitational at Langley Events Centre.

The Condors lost the bronze-medal game 81-63 to the Burnaby South Rebels.

Duchess dropped the semi-final 83-67 to the Centennial Centaurs, who went on to win the tournament, defeating the Kelowna Owls in the final 84-81.

NBA:

Third straight loss for the (15-7) Raptors who play the (8-16) Bulls tonight at 5:00 (PT) in Chicago.

NFL: (Week 14)

LA Rams  28  Seattle  12

First road loss of the season for the 10-3 Seahawks, who are a game behind the 49’ers in the NFC West.

San Francisco  48  New Orleans  46

The 49’ers are 11-2 while the Saints sit 10-3.

Kansas City  23  New England  16

The loss ended the Patriots 21-game home win streak, including playoffs.

Baltimore  24  Buffalo  17

The 9th straight victory for the (11-2) Ravens.

The 14th week of the NFL season concludes tonight with (2-10) NY Giants at (5-7) Philadelphia Eagles.

The Eagles, with a win, can move into a tie with the Dallas Cowboys for first place in the NFC East.

Philadelphia is favoured by 9 1/2 points.

With rookie Daniel Jones injured, the Giants, who have lost eight straight, will start Eli Manning at quarterback for the first time since week two.

CFL:

The Ottawa Redblacks have signed Paul LaPolice to a three-year contract to become the second head coach in team history.

LaPolice was the offensive coordinator this season with the Grey Cup champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

He also was the Blue Bombers head coach from 2010-2012.

LaPolice replaces Rick Campbell as the Redblacks head coach.

Campbell is now the head coach of the B.C. Lions.
