Winterhawks pull out the brooms to sweep the Cougars

The Prince George Cougars losing streak reached five games, with four of those losses coming in a six-day span against the Portland Winterhawks.

The Winterhawks completed the season sweep of the Cougars after posting a 4-1 victory Sunday ngiht before 2,863 fans in Portland.

Joel Hofer made 26 saves for the Winterhawks, who outshot the Cats 33-27.

The 19-year-old Hofer will be one of 8 WHL and 31 players overall that will attend Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team Selection Camp today (Monday) to Thursday in Oakville, Ont.

Tyler Brennan blocked 29 of 32 shots in the Prince George net.

Josh Maser, with his team-high 13th, notched the only PG goal, which briefly tied the game at 1 early in the second period.

Robbie Fromm-Delorme scored the winner at 7:19 of the middle period.

On Saturday, Portland blanked Prince George 3-0 as Hofer stopped 25 shots for his 4th shutout of the season (and second against the Cougars) before 9,326 fans in Portland.

The Cougars have scored one or fewer goals in 10 of their 29 games (five times they have been shutout and five other times they have scored just once).

The (20-6-1-2) Winterhawks are tied with the (21-6-1) Everett Silvertips for first place in the U.S. Division, although Everett has a game in hand.

The (6-20-1-2) are 12 points behind the (12-12-2-1) Tri-City Americans for the last Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George will host the (15-9-2) Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday in its final home games in 2019.
