Gauthier, Maser prove to be a Giant-sized headache against Vancouver

Taylor Gauthier is starting to turn the corner as the face of the Prince George Cougars.

After struggling with consistency his first two WHL seasons, the 18-year-old from Calgary put in another solid performance between the pipes during a 3-0 win over the Vancouver Giants Tuesday night before 3,055 fans at the Langley Events Centre.

Gauthier stopped 32 shots for the shutout while Josh Maser scored two of PG’s three power-play goals as the Cougars ended a seven-game road losing streak.

Rhett Rhinehart got the festivities underway for the Cougars at the 19:58 mark of the second period, capitalizing on a three-way scoring play that included Jack Sander and Ilijah Colina.

Maser capped things off in the final 20 minutes beating Vancouver goaltender Trent Miner who allowed three goals on 32 Cougar shots.

Since November 15th, Gauthier is starting to live up to the lofty expectations placed by former Cougars general manager Todd Harkins who labelled him as “the next Carey Price” after selecting him 10th overall in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

Over his past 11 starts, Gauthier has posted a 2.54 goals-against average to go along with a glowing .932 save percentage.

The Cougars went 3-for-6 on the power-play while Vancouver went 0-for-2.

The game stats are right here.

The road team has won four of the first five games of the season series.

Prince George improves to 8-20-1-3, eight points back of the Tri-City Americans for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

However, the Americans have two games in hand on the Cougars.

Vancouver drops to 14-15-1-1 overall.

The Giants are also 1-2 since making a blockbuster trade on December 7th that sent Dylan Plouffe, Lukas Svejkovsky, a 2020 third-round pick and a conditional 2021 third-round pick back to the Medicine Hat Tigers in exchange for Tyler Preziuso, Trevor Longo, a 2020 first-round draft pick and a conditional fifth-round draft pick in 2021.

The Cougars are off until December 27th when they begin a three-game road trip in Everett against the Silvertips.
