World Jr. Hockey Championship: (in the Czech Republic)

Canada  4  Russia  3

The Canadians rallied from a 3-1 third period deficit to secure the country’s 18th gold medal at the world junior hockey championship.

Akil Thomas scored the winner with 3:58 left in regulation.

Captain Barrett Hayton, battling through a shoulder injury, tied the game at 3 on a power play.

Joel Hofer, the tournament’s all-star goalie, made 35 saves for a fifth straight victory.

Alexis Lafreniere had two assists in the final and was named tournament MVP with four goals and six assists in five games.

The Russians, who have now lost four finals since last winning gold in 2011, have 10 silver medals since 1995.

Mitch Love of Quesnel, the head coach of the Saskatoon Blades, was one of the assistant coaches for Team Canada under head coach Dale Hunter.

Sweden  3  Finland  2

In the semifinals, Canada skunked Finland 5-0 and Russia got by Sweden 5-4 in overtime.

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars split their two home games against Everett.

The Cougars won 4-3 Friday before the Silvertips came back with a 5-2 victory Saturday.

Prince George heads out for a six-game East Division road trip that starts Wednesday in Regina.

They also play in Prince Albert Friday, Saskatoon Saturday, Winnipeg on Tuesday, Jan. 14th, Brandon on Wednesday the 15th and Moose Jaw on Friday the 17th.

The (10-22-2-3) Cougars are 6 points behind the (13-18-4-1) Tri-City Americans and eight points back of the (15-20-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds in the race for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Seattle won on Sunday 4-2 in Swift Current while Tri-City lost at home to Kelowna 7-3.


Everett Silvertips  5  Prince George Cougars  2 
(Saturday)

The Silvertips scored on their first two shots, just a minute apart at 1:03 (from Ronan Seely) and at 2:03 (from Jake Christiansen) of the opening period.

It was the first time in three meetings this season that the (26-9-2-1) Silvertips have beaten the Cougars.

Nikita Krivokrasov and Jack Sander tallied for the Cats before 2,267 fans at CN Centre.

Ryan Schoettler scored the game-winner, on the power-play, midway through the third period to break a 3-3 tie.

Tyson Upper notched a goal and two assists while Taylor Gauthier made 39 saves as Everett outshot Prince George 42-38 before 2,131 fans.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings, coming off Friday’s 4-3 victory in Langley, host the Surrey Eagles Friday and Saturday.

With 18 games left, the (14-21-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, three points behind (15-19-2-4) Surrey and six back of (18-18-1-1-1) Langley.

Prince George is riding a 3-game win streak.

Cariboo Cougars:

The (17-5-1-1) Cariboo Cougars visit the (20-2-1-1) Okanagan Rockets Saturday night at 5:00 and Sunday morning at  10:00 in Kelowna.

The Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team BCMML, three points behind the (19-6-0-1) Vancouver North West Hawks and six back of the Rockets.

Cariboo beat Okanagan 4-3 in the quarterfinals of Mac’s international tournament over the holidays in Calgary.

Brett Connolly of Prince George scored the winner, his 16th goal of the season for Florida, as the Panthers beat the Penguins 4-1 Sunday in Pittsburgh.

The Vancouver Canucks will begin a five-game road trip Tuesday (4:00 PT) in Tampa Bay.

Both the Canucks and (24-13-4) Lightning have won their last seven games.

Vancouver is coming off Saturday’s 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers.

The (23-15-4) Canucks are 3rd in the Pacific Division, just two points behind Arizona, four back of Vegas and one ahead of both Edmonton and Calgary.

There are 4 Monday games in the NHL including Edmonton at Toronto and Winnipeg at Montreal.

Elsewhere, Colorado visits the New York Islanders and Columbus plays in LA.

The Dallas Cowboys have decided to hire Mike McCarthy as their next head coach.

McCarthy, who guided the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl eight years ago, will replace Jason Garrett.
