WHL: (PG Cougars)

Regina Pats  5  Prince George Cougars  4  (SO)

The Cougars dropped to 0-4 in the shootout after blowing leads of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3.

The Pats tied the game at 4 (on a goal by Logan Nijhoff) with just 3:12 left in the third.

Regina won the shootout 2-1 before 3,776 fans at the Brandt Centre.

Filip Koffer scored twice for the Cougars (two minutes apart in the first period) and Brendan Boyle and Connor Bowie also scored in regulation.

Taylor Gauthier made 41 saves as the (12-21-3-2) Pats outshot the Cats 45-35.

The Cougars continue their six-game East Division road trip Friday in Prince Albert against the (21-14-5-1) Raiders.

They also play Saturday in Saskatoon, Tuesday in Winnipeg, Wednesday in Brandon before concluding the trip Friday, Jan. 17th in Moose Jaw.

The (10-22-2-4) Cougars are five points behind the (13-18-4-1) Tri-City Americans and seven
points back of the (15-20-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds in the race for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

The WHL trade deadline (as well as the BCHL) is Friday.

Former PG Cougars goalie Isaiah DiLaura has been dealt by the Portland Winterhawks to the  Swift Current Broncos in exchange for a conditional 2020 7th round draft pick.

 

PG Spruce Kings: (BCHL)

The Prince George Spruce Kings have only three home games this month, two of them this weekend.

The Spruce Kings, riding a three-game win streak, entertain the Surrey Eagles Friday and Saturday.

With 18 games remaining, the (14-21-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, three points behind (15-19-2-4) Surrey and six back of (18-19-1-1-1) Langley.

PG, Surrey and Langley have all played 40 games.

NHL: (3 games Wednesday)

 

The (23-16-4) Vancouver Canucks visit Brett Connolly and the (22-16-5) Florida Panthers tonight (4:00) which is game two on a five-game road trip.

The 27-year-old Connolly, a former PG and Cariboo Cougar, has 26 points, including 16 goals, in 43 games this season with the Panthers, who are three points out of a playoff spot.

The Canucks are 5th in the Pacific Division, but just a point behind both Edmonton and Calgary and four back of both Arizona and Vegas, who share the top spot.

There are 11 games in total tonight in the NHL, including Edmonton at Montreal. The Habs have lost their last seven.

Calgary is home to Minnesota and Winnipeg plays in Boston.

The only Canadian teams idle are Toronto and Ottawa.

San Jose Sharks Captain Logan Couture has a fractured ankle and is expected to miss at least six weeks.

The 30-year-old Couture leads the Sharks in scoring with 36 points (14 goals).

 

Cariboo Cougars:

The (17-5-1-1) Cariboo Cougars visit the (20-2-1-1) Okanagan Rockets Saturday night at 5:00 and Sunday morning at 10:00 in Kelowna.

The Cougars are in 3rd place in the 11-team BCMML, three points behind the (19-6-0-1) Vancouver North West Hawks and six back of the Rockets.

Cariboo beat Okanagan 4-3 in the quarterfinals of Mac’s international tournament over the holidays in Calgary.

Canada West Basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Fraser Valley Cascades Friday night at 6:00 and 8:00 and Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. in Canada West basketball.

Halfway thru the regular season, the 4-6 UNBC men are 11th out of 17 teams.

The 3-7 UNBC women are 13th.

The Cascades are 4-6 (men) and 6-4 (women).

The top 12 will advance to the playoffs.

NBA:

Toronto Raptors  112  Charlotte Hornets  110  (OT)

The (25-13) Raptors are 4th in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto will host San Antonio in its next game on Sunday (3 .p.m PT).

NFL:

In an Instagram post, quarterback Tom Brady said he still has more to prove.

The 42-year-old Brady is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 18th.

The New England Patriots can’t assign him the franchise tag.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft told Peter King of NBC Sports that his “hope and prayer” is that Brady either plays for New England or retires.

The NFL conference semifinals are featured this weekend.

In the NFC, Minnesota is at San Francisco Saturday (1:35 p.m. PT) and Seattle plays at Green Bay Sunday (3:40 p.m. PT).

In the AFC, Tennessee visits Baltimore (Saturday 5:15 p.m. PT) and Houston is at Kansas City (Sunday at 12:05 p.m. PT).
