WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars conclude their six-game East Division road trip when they visit the Moose Jaw Warriors tonight.

Prince George is 20th and Moose Jaw 21st in the WHL overall standings out of 22 teams.

The Cougars, who fell 4-0 in Brandon on Wednesday, are 1-2-1-1 on the trip and have been outscored 9-1 in their last two games.

The (11-25-2) Warriors are 19 points out of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Prince George is eight points behind the (17-20-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

The Cougars are also four points back of the (14-21-4-1) Tri-City Americans.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings entertain the Langley Rivermen tonight in their final home game in the month of January.

It will be Mohawks night at the RMCA as the Spruce Kings salute the 1975-76 Coy Cup champions.

The Mohawks were the first team to play in the PG “Coliseum” in 1958.

The Spruce Kings have lost their last seven home games but Prince George is 5-0 this season against Langley.

With 15 regular-season games remaining, the (14-24-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, seven points behind the (17-20-2-4) Surrey Eagles and eight back of the (19-20-1-1-1) Langley Rivermen.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars and the Northern Capitals are in Fort St. James this weekend to compete in the Winter Classic.

The Major Midget Cougars host the (20-7-0-1) Vancouver NW Hawks Saturday night at 5:30 on outdoor ice at Ernie Sam Memorial Arena, located on Nak’azdli Whut’en territory, and Sunday afternoon at 12:30 at the Fort Forum.

The (17-7-1-1) Cougars are in fifth place in the 11-team BCMML, two points behind the Vancouver NE Chiefs, four points back of the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, five behind the Vancouver NW Hawks and 10 back of the (22-2-1-1) Okanagan Rockets.

The (10-7-2) Capitals, of the B.C. Hockey Female Midget AAA League, will face the (16-1) Greater Vancouver Comets outdoors Sunday morning at 9:00 at the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena.

Those teams also have league indoor games tonight at 7:00 in Vanderhoof and Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Fort Forum.

NHL: (13 Thursday games) Edmonton and Winnipeg only Canadian teams idle

Vancouver Canucks  3  Arizona Coyotes  1

Jacob Markstrom made 35 saves and Elias Pettersson picked up two assists as the Canucks increased their home win streak to seven games.

Jake Virtanen snapped a 1-1 tie late in the second period with his 14th goal of the season, one shy of his career-high.

The (26-18-4) Canucks are tied with Vegas for third in the Pacific Division, only a point behind Calgary and Arizona and just a point in front of Edmonton.

Vancouver will host (21-24-4) San Jose Saturday and (30-10-8) St. Louis Monday.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the UBC Okanagan Heat tonight and Saturday in Canada West basketball in Kelowna.

The 4-8 UNBC men are 12th out of 17 teams.

The 3-9 UNBC women are 13th.

The top 12 will advance to the playoffs.

UBCO is 1-13 (men) and 2-13 (women).

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors host the (13-27) Washington Wizards tonight (4:00 PT).

The (26-14) Raptors are 4th in the Eastern Conference, a game back of Boston and two behind Miami.

MLB:

Carlos Beltran is out as manager of the New York Mets before beginning his first season with the team.

Beltran, a longtime outfielder, is the only player named in MLB’s investigation of the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal.

“Over my 20 years in the game, I’ve always taken pride in being a leader and doing things the right way, and in this situation, I failed,” Beltran said in a statement issued through agent Dan Lozano.

 

NFL:

The NFL Conference Finals take to the field on Sunday.

Tennessee visits Kansas City (12:05 p.m. PT) in the AFC followed by Green Bay at San Francisco (3:40 p.m.) in the NFC.

The winners advance to the Super Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 2nd in Miami.

The Chiefs and 49’ers are favoured by 7 1/2 points.
