Comets bottle up Northern Capitals in Female Midget Winter Classic

It was like a scene out of the movie Field of Dreams.

For the very first time, the Greater Vancouver Comets and Northern Capitals took their game outside on Sunday and participated in the first ever Female Midget Hockey Winter Classic from the Ernie Sam Memorial Arena in Fort Saint James.

The league-leading Comets skated to a 4-0 win in the outdoor game, sweeping the triple-header.

Jenna Buglioni opened the scoring for Vancouver blasting one past Caps goaltender Tessa Sturgeon for a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

In the second, the Capitals pressed hard for the equalizer, with the best chance coming off a breakaway but Pyper Alexander was stoned by Hailey Macleod.

Both coaches elected to switch goalies at the halfway mark of the contest.

Shortly after, the Comets extended the lead with a pair of tallies courtesy of Madisyn Wiebe and Vienna Rubin who beat Capitals netminder Cadace Petticlerc-Crosby.

Grace Elliott capped off her big weekend with another goal late in the third period to improve the Comets record to 19-1-0-0, while the Capitals drop to 10-10-2-0 on the season.

In Major Midget AAA boys action, the Cariboo Cougars exacted revenge on the Vancouver North West Hawks winning a wild 7-4 affair from the Fort Forum.

Nico Myatovic and Hunter Brown gave the Cougars an early 2-0 at the end of the first period solving Hawks goalie Jameson Kaine.

The red seas parted in the middle frame as both teams scored a combined eight goals.

Owen Howard kicked off the scoring for the Hawks to cut the deficit down to 2-1 but that was quickly washed away thanks to a pair of snappy replies from Alex Ochitwa and Fischer O’Brien, stretching the Cougars margin to three goals.

VNW didn’t back down though as Ben Kotylak scored his first of two goals in the period followed by a single from John Babcock.

The Cougars once again responded accordingly as Ochitwa also got his second marker of the period who then set up Brennan Bott in the dying seconds for a 6-4 edge at the intermission.

Carter Yarish sealed the victory for Cariboo with an empty-netter giving Cariboo an 18-8-1-1 mark, good enough for 5th place in the BC Major Midget League standings.

VNW drops to 21-8-0-1, which is third place.

Kenny Gerow picked up the victory in net for Cariboo.

The Major-Midget Cats also scored four times on the power-play.

The Cougars head to Burnaby next weekend to play the Vancouver North East Chiefs (19-7-0-0).
