BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

Prince George Spruce Kings  4  Coquitlam Express  3

First time in six meetings this season that the Spruce Kings beat the BCHL leaders.

Prince George erased a 2-0 deficit by scoring three unanswered goals in the second.

Corey Cunningham tallied the winner at 5:47 of the third.

Carter Woodside made 28 saves as Coquitlam outshot P.G. 31-20.

This was the start of six consecutive road games for the Spruce Kings who also play Friday in Surrey, Saturday in Chilliwack, Jan, 29th in Trail, Jan. 31st in Vernon and Feb. 1st in West Kelowna before hosting Wenatchee on Feb. 5th.

With 13 regular-season games left, the (16-24-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 4 points behind the (19-22-1-1-1) Langley Rivermen and 6 points back of the (18-20-3-4) Surrey Eagles.

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars have six consecutive games at CN Centre beginning with a doubleheader against the BC Division-leading Kamloops Blazers Friday and Saturday.

The (12-24-3-4) Cougars are eight points behind the (18-22-2-1) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card spot with both teams having 25 games left, including four against each other.

The Cats are also two points back of the (14-23-4-1) Tri-City Americans.

The Cougars also host Tri-City Jan. 31st and Feb. 1st and Seattle on Feb. 4th and 5th.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The (18-8-1-1) Cariboo Cougars visit the (19-7) Vancouver Northeast Chiefs Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. in Burnaby.

Both teams are tied for 4th place in the BC Major Midget League, although the Chiefs hold two games in hand.

The Cougars have a dozen regular-season games left, with the last eight of them on home ice at Kin 1.

NHL: (Final two games prior to the  All-Star break)

With the NHL All-Star Game Saturday in St.Louis, regular-season action resumes with six games on Monday, including the (30-11-8) St. Louis Blues at the Vancouver Canucks.

The (27-18-4) Canucks have won their last eight home games.

Vancouver leads the tight Pacific Division but is just a point over Edmonton, Calgary, Arizona and Vegas.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves host the Brandon Bobcats Friday night at 6 and 8 and again Saturday at 5:00 and 7:00 PMThe UNBC women are 5-9 and in 12th place out of 17 teams.

The UNBC men, who have lost their last seven, are 4-10 and also in 12th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Brandon is 1-13 (both women and men).

5th-year player Maria Mongomo of the UNBC Timberwolves is the women’s Canada West third star of the week.

In a pair of basketball victories over the UBC Okanagan Heat (104-54 and 72-70), Mongomo averaged 32.5 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and four steals.

She became the Timberwolves all-time leading scorer.

Mongomo now sits top five in scoring, rebounding, and steals in the conference.

NBA:

Toronto Raptors  107  Philadelphia 76’ers  95

The Raptors extended their win streak to five games.

Toronto will play Friday in New York and Sunday afternoon in San Antonio.

The (30-14) Raptors are 3rd in the NBA Eastern Conference, a game back of Miami.

NFL:

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning has decided to retire from the NFL after 16 seasons.

A two-time Super Bowl winner and two-time Super Bowl MVP, the 39-year-old Manning leaves the game as the Giants’ all-time passing leader in yards (57,023) and touchdowns (366), finishing with a career regular-season record of 117-117.

Australian Open: (Tennis)

Canadian Milos Raonic, the #32 seed, will face #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round early Friday morning Pacific Time at the Australian Open.
