“The extremes are a bit more extreme”:Ice Oval ruled by rollercoaster temperatures

The PG Outdoor Ice Oval continues to operate on a day to day basis because of the inconsistent temperatures the region continues to deal with.

This week saw temperatures of above zero for the first time this season after last week’s temperature dropped to -44.

“During the extreme cold, we kept our schedule for the public the same. Of course, if you really wanted to you could,” explained Spokesperson Lyle Dickieson.

Dickieson noted the warmer temperatures make things tough to predict.

“This is starting to look a whole lot like the year we had the winter games in 2015 where we had lots of warm days, and just cold enough to refreeze things at night.”

Dickieson said everything was good to go that year, but then the rain ruined things.

The Oval staff monitor weather forecasts, but according to Dickieson, they have stopped looking more than a few days in advance because of the changing conditions.

“We are all used to dealing with weather, but it seems with each year the extremes are just a bit more extreme.”

Dickieson said they decide in the morning if the Oval will be open for business, and then they update the status on social media.
