WHL: (PG Cougars)

After two superb games against the Kamloops Blazers, Taylor Gauthier of the Prince George Cougars was named the WHL Goalie of the Week.

In a weekend split, Gauthier posted a 1.50 goals-against average, stopping 77 of 80 shots for a .963 save percentage.

Gauthier has a 3-2 record, 2.02 GAA, and a 0.954 SV%. in five games this season against the B.C. Division-leading Blazers.

In 35 games this season, the 18-year-old from Calgary has posted a 9-19-3-4 record, 2.87 GAA, 0.917 SV%, and one shutout.

The P.G. Cougars are 1-1 on a six-game homestand which will continue Friday and Saturday against the (14-25-4-1) Tri-City Americans.

The (13-25-3-4) Cougars and the Americans are eight points behind the (18-22-3-2) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George will also host Seattle on Feb. 4th and 5th.

The Americans have lost six straight and are 1-9 since trading goalie Beck Warm to the Edmonton Oil Kings on January 1st.

In their last 10 games, Tri-City has been outscored 70-24, including 45-9 in their last six.

The B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame has named six inductees, including former PG Cougars defenceman Eric Brewer into its class of 2020.

Brewer, now a minority owner of the Cougars, played three seasons with the Cougars (1995-98) before going on to play more than 1,000 NHL regular-season games over 16 years.

NHL: (6 Monday games)

Vancouver  3  St. Louis  1

Thatcher Demko made 36 saves as St. Louis outshot Vancouver 37-26.

J.T. Miller scored a pair of second-period goals as the Canucks extended their home winning streak to nine games.

The (27-18-4) Canucks lead the Pacific Division but three points over Edmonton, Calgary, Arizona and Vegas.

Vancouver will play at San Jose on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) to begin a five-game road trip.

The Canucks also visit NY Islanders Saturday (10:00 a.m. PT), Carolina Sunday (11:00 a.m. PT), Boston on Tues. Feb. 4th (4:00 p.m. PT) and Minnesota on Thurs. Feb. 6th (5:00 p.m. PT).

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings are 1-2 on a six-game road trip which will continue Wednesday in Trail against the (30-14-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters.

Prince George will also play Friday in Vernon and Saturday in West Kelowna before hosting Wenatchee on Feb. 5th.

With 11 regular-season games left, the (16-26-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 7 points behind the (20-23-2-1-1) Langley Rivermen and 10 points back of the (20-21-3-4) Surrey Eagles.

In the overall BCHL standings, P.G. is still in a playoff spot, tied with the Victoria Grizzlies with 37 points followed by the West Kelowna Warriors with 33 and the Merritt Centennials with 24.

With 16 of the 17 teams to qualify for the postseason, it appears that Merritt will be the odd team out.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars have 10 regular-season games left, with the last eight of them on home ice at Kin 1.

The Cougars, who have lost five of their last six, will be in Kelowna this weekend for a BCMML showcase event.

The Cats play the (10-21-1-0) ninth-place South Island Royals Saturday night at 8:00 and Sunday morning at 11:15.

The (18-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the Regina Cougars Friday and Saturday in Canada West basketball.

The Timberwolves will conclude their regular season with home games Feb. 7th and 8th against MacEwan.

The 7-9 UNBC women have won four straight and are in 10th place out of 17 teams.

The 4-12 UNBC men have lost their last nine and are in 12th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Regina is 9-8 (women) and 7-9 (men).

MacEwan is 2-14 (women) and 0-16 (men).

NBA:

The NBA has postponed the LA Lakers home game tonight against the LA Clippers.

The game will be rescheduled at a later date.

“The decision was made out of respect for the Lakers organization, which is deeply grieving the tragic loss of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people in a helicopter crash on Sunday,” the NBA said in a statement.

The next game for the Lakers will be Friday at home against Portland.

The Toronto Raptors put a seven-game win streak on the line tonight when they host the (12-35) Atlanta Hawks tonight (4:30 p.m. PT).

The (32-14) Raptors have won seven straight and are tied with the Miami Heat for second in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Australian Open: (Tennis)

Canadian Milos Raonic is out at the Australian Open.

Defending champ and #2 seed Novak Djokovic eliminated the 29-year-old from Thornhill, Ont. in straight sets
(6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (1) in the quarter-finals.

Djokovic improved his career record against Raonic to 10-0.

#3 Roger Federer overcame seven match points in the 4th set to beat American Tennys Sandgren in five sets to advance to the semifinals against Djokovic.

Federer took the 5th set 6-3.

On the women’s side, top-seed Ashleigh Barty of Australia has advanced to the semis where she will play American and #14 seed Sofia Kenin.

 

CFL:

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed quarterback Zach Collaros to a two-year contract extension.

The 31-year-old Collaros spent last year with Saskatchewan, Toronto and Winnipeg.

He played one regular-season game and three playoff games with the Blue Bombers, all victories, including the team’s first Grey Cup win in 29 years.

 

NFL: 

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49’ers are in Miami preparing for Sunday’s Super Bowl game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. PT.

Kansas City will play in the Super Bowl game for the first time in 50 years.

The Chiefs are 1-1 all-time in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco is just the third team to make it to the Super Bowl a year after winning four or fewer games.

Cincinnati did it in 1988 and the Rams 1999, with the Rams the only team to go from four wins to a championship in one year.

The 49’ers will be making their seventh Super Bowl appearance. They are 5-1.
