WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars host the struggling Tri-City Americans tonight and Saturday.

Both teams are 10 points behind the (19-22-3-2) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card playoff spot.

The (13-25-3-4) Cougars, 1-1 on a six-game homestand, also host Seattle on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The (14-26-4-1) Americans have lost seven straight and are 1-10 since trading goalie Beck Warm to the Edmonton Oil Kings on January 1st.

In their last 11 games, Tri-City has been outscored 74-26, including 49-11 in their last seven.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings have just 10 regular-season games left.

The Spruce Kings, 1-3 on a six-game road trip, play tonight in Vernon against the (25-20-2-1) Vipers.

They also visit West Kelowna Saturday before hosting Wenatchee on Wednesday.

The (16-27-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 7 points behind the (20-23-2-1-1) Langley Rivermen and 10 points back of the (20-21-3-4) Surrey Eagles.

In the overall BCHL standings, P.G. is 15th out of 17 and in a playoff spot with 37 points followed by the West Kelowna Warriors with 36 and the Merritt Centennials with 24.

With 16 of the 17 teams to qualify for the postseason, it appears that Merritt will be the odd team out.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars play the (10-21-1-0) ninth-place South Island Royals Saturday night at 8:00 and Sunday morning at 11:15 at the BCMML showcase event in Kelowna.

The Cougars, who have lost five of their last six, have 10 regular-season games left, with the last eight of them on home ice at Kin 1.

The (18-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league.

NHL: (3 Thursday games)

There are 7 Friday games in the NHL with 3 Canadian teams in action, all on home ice.

Edmonton entertains St. Louis, Winnipeg hosts Boston and Ottawa welcomes Washington.

The Vancouver Canucks visit the (29-15-5) NY Islanders Saturday (10:00 a.m. PT) and the (29-18-3) Carolina Hurricanes Sunday (11:00 a.m. PT).

The Canucks, who have won four in a row and six of their last seven, are 1-0 on a five-game road trip.

They also play at Boston on Tuesday (4:00 p.m. PT) and at Minnesota on Thursday (5:00 p.m. PT).

Vancouver leads the Pacific Division by two points over Calgary, four over Edmonton & Arizona and five over Vegas.

The San Jose Sharks have lost forward Tomas Hertl for the rest of the season with a torn ACL and MCL in his left knee. Hertl has 36 points (16 goals) in 48 games.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

This is the second-to-last weekend in the Canada West basketball regular season.

The UNBC Timberwolves visit the Regina Cougars tonight and Saturday in Canada West basketball.

The Timberwolves will conclude their regular season with home games Feb. 7th and 8th against MacEwan.

The 7-9 UNBC women have won four straight and are in 10th place out of 17 teams.

The 4-12 UNBC men have lost their last nine and are in 12th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Regina is 9-8 (women) and 7-9 (men).

MacEwan is 2-14 (women) and 0-16 (men).

Cranbrook is hosting the BC men’s and women’s curling championships.

Toronto Raptors  115  Cleveland Cavaliers  109

The (34-14) Raptors extended their win streak to nine games.

Toronto is second in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Australian Open: (Tennis)

Defending champ Novak Djokovic will play #5, Dominic Thiem, in the men’s final at the Australian Open.

Djokovic beat 38-year-old Roger Federer in straight sets (7-6, 6-4, 6-3) in the semifinals while Thiem eliminated
#7 Alexander Zverev in four sets in the other semi,

The women’s final Saturday at the Australian Open will feature American Sofia Kenin against Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

NFL: 

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49’ers are in Miami for Super Bowl 54.

Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. PT.

Kansas City is 1-1 in the Super Bowl but hasn’t played this game in 50 years.

San Francisco is 5-1 in the Super Bowl and if the 49’ers win, they will tie the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history (6).

The 49’ers are just the third team to make it to the Super Bowl a year after winning four or fewer games.

Cincinnati did it in 1988 and the Rams 1999, with the Rams the only team to go from four wins to a championship in one year.

The Chiefs are favoured by just one point.
