WHL: (PG Cougars)

Prince George Cougars  5  Tri-City Americans  1

The Cougars exploded with four unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the third period to break a 1-1 tie before 2,126 fans at CN Centre.

The same teams meet again tonight in Prince George.

The Americans have lost eight straight and during that stretch have been outscored 54-12.

Tri-City is 1-11 and outscored 79-27 in its last 12 games.

The (14-25-3-4) Cougars are 9th in the Western Conference, eight points behind the (19-22-3-2) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final wild-card playoff spot.

Both teams have 22 games remaining, including four against each other.

Prince George will host Seattle on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

Vernon Vipers  2  Prince George Spruce Kings  1

The Vipers scored the winning goal with 17 seconds left in the third period.

The Spruce Kings are 1-4 on a six-game road trip that will conclude tonight against the Warriors in West Kelowna.

Prince George, with just nine regular-season games remaining, will be at home on Wednesday against the Wenatchee Wild.

The (16-28-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 7 points behind the
(20-24-2-1-1) Langley Rivermen.

In the overall BCHL standings, P.G. is 15th out of 17 and in a playoff spot with 37 points followed by West Kelowna with 36 and the Merritt Centennials with 24.

With 16 of the 17 teams to qualify for the postseason, it appears that Merritt will be the odd team out.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars play the (10-21-1-0) South Island Royals tonight at 8:00 and Sunday morning at 11:15 at the BCMML showcase event in Kelowna.

The Cougars, who have lost five of their last six, have 10 regular-season games left, with the last eight of them on home ice at Kin 1.

The (18-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league.

UPDATE:

The Vancouver Canucks beat the New York Islanders today (Saturday) as Quinn Hughes scored his second goal of the game in overtime.

The (30-18-4) Canucks, who have won their last five games and seven of eight, visit the (29-19-3) Carolina Hurricanes Sunday (11:00 a.m. PT).

They also play at Boston on Tuesday (4:00 p.m. PT) and at Minnesota on Thursday (5:00 p.m. PT).

It was the 5th consecutive win for the UNBC women.

(Men’s game)

Regina Cougars  90  UNBC Timberwolves  58

It was the 10th consecutive loss for the UNBC men.

The Timberwolves visit Regina again tonight before they conclude their regular season with home games Feb. 7th and 8th against the MacEwan Griffins.

The 8-9 UNBC women are in 8th place out of 17 teams.

The 4-13 UNBC men are in 13th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Regina is 8-9 (women) and 8-9 (men).

MacEwan is 2-15 (women) and 2-15 (men).

The (35-14) Raptors extended their win streak to 10 games.

Toronto is second in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Australian Open: (Tennis)

American Sofia Kenin has her first Major.

The 14th-seeded Kenin beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the women’s final of the Australian Open 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Defending champ Novak Djokovic goes after his 8th Australian title when he plays #5 Dominic Thiem in the men’s final Sunday.

NFL: 

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49’ers are in Miami for Super Bowl 54.

Kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. PT.

Kansas City is 1-1 in the Super Bowl but hasn’t played this game in 50 years.

San Francisco is 5-1 in the Super Bowl and if the 49’ers win, they will tie the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history (6).

The Chiefs are favoured by just one point.
