WHL: (PG Cougars)

Tri-City Americans  3  Prince George Cougars  2 (Saturday)

The Americans scored all three of their goals on the power play to end an 8-game losing streak.

Mason Dunsford made 37 saves in the Tri-City net for his first WHL win before 2,231 fans at CN Centre.

Prince George Cougars  5  Tri-City Americans  1  (Friday)

The Cougars exploded with four unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the third period to break a 1-1 tie before 2,126 fans at CN Centre.

The (14-26-3-4) Cougars are 10 points behind the (20-22-3-2) Seattle Thunderbirds for the final Western Conference wild-card playoff spot.

Both teams have 21 games remaining, including four against each other.

Prince George will host Seattle on Tuesday and Wednesday.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

Prince George Spruce Kings  3  West Kelowna Warriors  1 (Saturday)

Carter Woodside made 24 saves for the Spruce Kings, who ended a four-game losing streak.

Vernon Vipers  2  Prince George Spruce Kings  1  (Friday)

The Vipers scored the winning goal with 17 seconds left in the third period.

The Spruce Kings, with just eight regular-season games left, host the Wenatchee Wild on Wednesday.

The (17-28-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 5 points behind the
(20-24-2-1-1) Langley Rivermen.

In the overall BCHL standings, P.G. is 15th out of 17 and in a playoff spot with 39 points followed by West Kelowna with 36 and the Merritt Centennials with 24.

With 16 of the 17 teams to qualify for the postseason, it appears that Merritt will be the odd team out.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at the league showcase in Kelowna)

Cariboo Cougars  5  South Island Royals  3  (Saturday)

The same teams play again this morning at 11:15 in Kelowna.

The (19-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league and will play their last eight regular-season games at home at Kin 1.

NHL: (14 Saturday games)

Vancouver Canucks  4  New York Islanders  3  (OT)

Quinn Hughes scored his second goal of the game at 42 seconds of overtime.

The (30-18-4) Canucks have won five in a row and seven of their last eight.

Vancouver is 2-0 on a five-game road trip that continues today (11:00 a.m. PT)  against the Carolina Hurricanes.

They also play at Boston on Tuesday (4:00 p.m. PT) and at Minnesota on Thursday (5:00 p.m. PT).

Vancouver leads the Pacific Division by two points over Edmonton, three over Vegas and four over Calgary.

Curling: UDPATED at 1:00 p.m.

This is the final day of the B.C. men’s and women’s curling championships in Cranbrook.

The women’s championship game this morning had Corryn Brown of Kamloops over defending BC Scotties champion Sarah Wark of Abbotsford 8-7 in an extra end.

Brown scored two in the 10th and stole the winning point in the extra end.

The Wark team includes third Kristen Pilote, second Carley Sandwith, lead Jen Rusnell and coach Rick Fewster.

Fewster is from Prince George and his daughters, Pilote and Rusnell are originally from PG.

In men’s play, defending champion Jim Cotter from Vernon and Kelowna will play Tyler Tardi of Langley/Victoria in the final this afternoon at 1:00 (PT).

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

(Women’s games)

UNBC Timberwolves  76  Regina Cougars  71  (Saturday)

It was the 6th consecutive victory for the UNBC women.

It was the 11th consecutive loss for the UNBC men.

The Timberwolves conclude their regular season with home games Friday and Saturday against the MacEwan Griffins.

The 9-9 UNBC women have clinched a playoff spot and are in 8th place out of 17 teams.

The 4-14 UNBC men are in 13th spot.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

Regina is 8-10 (women) and 9-9 (men).

MacEwan is 2-16 (women) and 2-16 (men).

The Toronto Raptors host the (19-32) Chicago Bulls today (noon P.T.).

The (35-14) Raptors are riding a 10-game win streak.

Toronto is second in the NBA Eastern Conference.

Australian Open: (Tennis)

Novak Djokovic beat #5, Dominic Thiem, in the men’s final at the Australian Open.

The 32-year-old Djokovic took the 5th and deciding set 6-4 to capture his 8th Australian Open title and 17th Major.

Roger Federer has the most Grand Slam wins with 20 followed by Rafael Nadal with 19.

American Sofia Kenin has her first Major.

On the women’s side, 14th-seeded Sofia Kenin of the U.S. beat Garbine Muguruza of Spain in the final 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 for her first Major.

NFL: 

Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson is the unanimous choice as MVP of the NFL.

After a couple of weeks of preparation, the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49’ers play in Super Bowl 54 in Miami.

Kickoff is scheduled for this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. PT.

Kansas City is 1-1 in the Super Bowl but hasn’t played this game in 50 years.

San Francisco is 5-1 in the Super Bowl and if the 49’ers win, they will tie the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl victories in NFL history (6).

The Chiefs are favoured by just one point.
