Shorthanded Timberwolves sweep Regina, clinch WBB playoff berth

Sometimes the hard way is the most satisfying.

The UNBC Timberwolves women’s basketball team found that out on Saturday as they completed a weekend sweep on the road against the Regina Cougars, winning 76-71.

Maria Mongomo once again put the T-Wolves (9-9) on her back with a 27-point performance while Madison Landry, Emma vanBruinessen (17 rebounds) and Emily Holmes were also in the double-digits.

UNBC has looked more like a mash unit the second half of the season as only six players dressed during the second half of the double-header.

“These injuries have been so hard to adjust to. Having only one sub is extremely difficult to play with,” said UNBC’s Issy Bourque.

“Some players are only getting breathers in timeouts, and playing the entire game. Staying healthy is huge for us because we need to be ready for playoffs.”

With the win, the Timberwolves have clinched a berth in the Canada West postseason for the fourth consecutive year.

Regina drops to 8-10 on the season and was led by Macaela Crone with 23 points.

On Friday, UNBC edged the Cougars by a 73-67 margin.

Madison Landry led the way with 30 points, playing the entire game.

The fourth-year player out of Duchess Park went 12-for-25 on field goals for the T-Wolves.

Crone was the top-scorer again for Regina with 21 points.

In men’s action, the Timberwolves losing streak reached 11 after they dropped a pair against Regina falling 78-67 (Saturday), 90-58 (Friday).

Matt Barnard had an efficient game for the Cougars (9-9), going 8-for-12 on field goals posting 22 points in just 28 minutes of action.

Tyrell Laing hooped 27 points for UNBC (4-14).

The PGSS grad netted 22 points during the first game of the double-header.

The UNBC women are in 8th place in the conference.

The UNBC men are a game back of the Brandon Bobcats for the final playoff spot.

Both varsity teams welcome the MacEwan Griffins to the Northern Sport Centre Friday (Noon and 6) and Saturday (5 and 7).
