WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars play three of their next four (and four of their next 8) games against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

The two teams play a doubleheader tonight and Wednesday at CN Centre.

They also meet Sunday (Feb 9th and 23rd) in Seattle.

The (14-26-3-4) Cougars, 2-2 on a 6-game homestand, are 10 points back of the (20-22-3-2) Thunderbirds for the final wild-card playoff spot.

Both teams have 21 games remaining.

BCHL:
(PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings will move from the Coastal Conference (Mainland Division) to the Interior Conference in the 2020-21 BCHL season.

With the addition of the expansion Cranbrook Bucks, the BCHL Board of Governors has voted to change to a two-conference system with nine teams on each side.

Both the Spruce Kings and Colts will play in the Interior, joining Penticton, Vernon, West Kelowna, Trail, Salmon Arm, Merritt and Wenatchee.

The league has also announced that it is moving from a 58-game regular-season schedule to 54, as well as a later start date in September.

The Spruce Kings, with just eight regular-season games left, host the (24-22-3-1) Wenatchee Wild on Wednesday and the (10-35-1-3) Merritt Centennials on Friday.

The (17-28-2-3) Spruce Kings are last in the Mainland Division, 7 points behind the (21-24-2-1-1) Langley Rivermen.

In the overall BCHL standings, P.G. is 15th out of 17 and in a playoff spot with 39 points followed by West Kelowna with 36 and Merritt with 24.

With 16 of the 17 teams to qualify for the postseason, it appears that Merritt will be the odd team out.

NHL: (3 Monday games)

Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen left the game after the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.

The Vancouver Canucks play tonight in Boston (4:00 p.m. PT).

The (31-10-12) Bruins lead the Atlantic Division and are second overall in the NHL standings, just a point behind Washington.

Boston is 17-2-9 at home.

The (30-18-5) Canucks have picked up five out of a possible six points on a five-game road trip that concludes Thursday in Minnesota (5:00 p.m. PT).

Vancouver leads the Pacific Division by three points over Edmonton, four over Vegas, five over Calgary and six over Arizona.

There are a total of 13 NHL games tonight with Toronto the only Canadian team idle.

Edmonton plays in Arizona, Calgary is home to San Jose, Winnipeg entertains Nashville, Montreal visits New Jersey and Ottawa hosts Anaheim.

Another game of note has Vegas at Tampa Bay.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

The Cariboo Cougars, coming off 5-3 and 7-0 victories over South Island, play their final eight regular-season games at Kin 1.

The Major Midget Cougars host the (7-26-0-1) Greater Vancouver Canadians Saturday night at 4:30 and Sunday morning at 10:30.

The (20-10-1-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league while the Canadians are at the bottom.

The major bantam Cariboo Cougars made the final of the Okanagan Classic tournament in Kelowna but fell 10-3 to Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy.

To get to the championship game, the Cats won quarterfinal and semifinal contests in shootouts.

In the quarterfinal, they downed Okanagan Hockey Academy Prep 2-1. Then, in the semifinal round, the Cougars got past St. Albert 3-2.

The Cats are currently in fourth place in the B.C. Hockey Major Bantam League at 11-11-0-2.

The Northern Capitals female midget team took on Okanagan Hockey Academy in three exhibition games in Penticton on the weekend and went unbeaten with a pair of wins (4-2 and 3-1) and a tie (3-3).

The Caps (10-10-2-0) are third in the B.C. Hockey Female Midget AAA League.

In bantam double-A zone competition, the North Central Bobcats fell 5-2 to Northeast on Saturday but bounced back for a 2-2 tie on Sundy.

The Bobcats are 2-15-3-0 on the season.

 

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves will conclude their regular-season in Canada West basketball this weekend with home games against the MacEwan Griffins.

The women play Friday at noon and Saturday at 5:00 p.m. while the men tip-off Friday night at 6:00 and Saturday evening at 7:00.

The 9-9 UNBC women have won six straight and have clinched a playoff spot sitting in 8th place out of 17 teams.

The 4-14 UNBC men have lost 11 in a row and are in 13th place.

The top 12 teams advance to the playoffs.

MacEwan is 2-16 in both the women’s and men’s divisions.

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors are 36-14 after 50 games.

They are riding a club-record tying 11 game win streak.

The Raptors, sitting second in the NBA Eastern Conference, play their next two games against the (31-18) Pacers, Wednesday in Toronto (4:30 PT) and Friday (5:00 PT) in Indiana.

Curling: 

B.C. women’s curling champion Corryn Brown of Kamloops will compete at the Canadian Scotties Tournament of Hearts from Feb. 15-23 in Moose Jaw.

The winner will represent Canada at the World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George March 14-22.

On the men’s side, Jim Cotter’s rink from the Okanagan will represent B.C. at the Tim Hortons Brier in Kingston, Ont., from Feb. 29 to Mar. 8.

Cotter is a 9-time provincial champion which is a B.C. record.

Cycling:

Prince George cyclist Callie Swan is turning pro.

The 21-year-old Swan has signed a contract with a Montreal-based team.

 

PG Iceman:

The 33rd Prince George Iceman will be held on Sunday.

The course for the multi-sport event consists of a 10km and 5 km Run, 8km cross country ski, 5 km skate and an 800 m swim for Individuals and Teams.

Registration deadline is tonight (Tuesday) at 9:00.

NFL:

At age 61 Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid says he has no plans to retire especially since he has Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes as his quarterback.

After 21 seasons as NFL head coach, Reid has 222 wins in the regular season and playoffs, which is 6th-most all-time.

The Chiefs Super Bowl parade will take place on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. PT.

Kansas City is listed 5/1 followed by Baltimore and San Francisco at 8/1 & New Orleans at 10/1.

Tennis:

Following his record 8th Australian Open title, Novak Djokovic returned to No. 1 in the ATP tennis rankings ahead of Rafael Nadal who slips from to #2.

Djokovic has captured 17 Majors behind Nadal with 19 and Roger Federer with 20.

On the women’s side, American Sofia Kenin, coming off her first Grand Slam trophy, has jumped to a career-high No. 7 in the WTA rankings.

Ash Barty held onto No. 1 while top Canadian Bianca Andreescu, who has been out since late October with a knee injury, remains at No. 6.
