WHL: (PG Cougars)

Calgary Hitmen  4  Prince George Cougars  2

The (30-18-4-1) Hitmen built up a 4-0 lead by scoring twice in the first 8 minutes of the first period and two more goals in the first two minutes of the second.

Taylor Gauthier, on his 19th birthday, allowed four goals on 16 shots before he was replaced in the P.G. net by Tyler Brennan.

Filip Koffer and Josh Maser tallied for the Cougars, who suffered their third straight loss before 4,012 fans at CN Centre.

Prince George will host the (19-31-2-3) Red Deer Rebels Monday afternoon at 2:00.

The (16-29-3-4) Cougars, who have 16 games remaining, are 9 points behind (21-26-3-3) Seattle and 12 back of (24-26-1-2) Kelowna in the race for the two wild-card playoff spots.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings) in Kitimat

Prince George Spruce Kings  5  Langley Rivermen  1

Corey Cunningham scored twice and added an assist while Jett Alexander made 32 saves for the Spruce Kings before 1,207 fans in Kitimat.

It was just the second win in the last 10 games for Prince George.

The (18-31-2-4) Spruce Kings play the (21-30-2-1-1) Rivermen again this afternoon at 1:00 in Kitimat.

P.G. will host first-place Coquitlam Friday and Saturday to close out its regular season.

The Spruce Kings are 15th out of 17 in the overall BCHL standings, five points ahead of West Kelowna and four  behind Langley.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars)

Cariboo Cougars  4  Kootenay Ice  2

The same teams play again this morning at 10:30 at Kin 1.

The (23-10-1-1) Cougars have won five straight and are in 5th place in the 11-team league with five regular-season games to go.

Kootenay is in 10th place and out of playoff contention.

The (8-27) Ice sit in 10th place and out of playoff contention.

NHL: (11 Saturday games)  Canadian teams went 2-2-1

The Vancouver Canucks host the (23-27-7) Anaheim Ducks this afternoon at 2:00.

The (32-21-5) Canucks, who have won 11 of their last 12 home games, lead the Pacific Division by one point over Edmonton and Vegas and by three points over Calgary and Arizona.

Brock Boeser will miss his third straight game for Vancouver.

Canada West Basketball: (UNBC Timberwolves)

The UNBC Timberwolves will visit the Calgary Dinos in the Canada West women’s basketball quarterfinals Thursday night (5:00 PT).

The Dinos finished first in the regular season with an 18-2 record, including two convincing victories over UNBC (71-46 and 67-58) on January 3rd and 4th.

The Timberwolves are riding a nine-game winning streak after they eliminated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 93-85 in double overtime on Friday.

Curling:

This is the opening weekend of the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw.

B.C. (Corryn Brown of Kamloops) won its opener 7-5 over P.E.I.

The Canadian champion will advance to the World Women’s Curling Championship in Prince George March 14th-22nd.
