PG’s Nitro Motorsports Park hosts sled ‘drag race’ event

A day of sled and snowmobile drag races brought several hundred spectators out to cheer on participants at Prince George’s Nitro Motorsports Park yesterday (Saturday).

30 racers took part in 15 separate events, but according to Nitro Motorsports, the races were unable to be completed fully due to conditions, though that didn’t dampen spirits.
“It was getting a little bit rough towards the end of the track, and a little bit dark,” explained Director Mike Weinhardt.
The races included everything from baby “kittykat” sleds, all the way up to the 300hp, turbocharged, nitrous burning open mod class.
The kittykats do about 12km/h with the bigger sleds reaching 30km per hour, with the larger equipment reaching up to 110 km per hour, according to Weinhardt.
The sled racing has been going on for several years in the Northern region, but Weinhardt noted he has seen more interest this year than last.
“There were roughly 440 people through the gate, the park was very full and it was a very beautiful day to have the event!”
Weinhardt originally put on sled drags in Vanderhoof for 5 years, but Nitro is taking it over for Prince George from now on, he said.
