Local beekeepers look forward to more provincial bee health funding

Beekeepers are now able to apply for the fifth round of Bee BC funding, enabling them to launch creative beekeeping projects in their communities.

The application intake began this week for regional and community-based organizations, beekeeping associations and beekeepers in B.C.

The fund also provides support to smaller-scale, community-based projects that support provincial bee health.

Projects, eligible for up to $5,000, can range from providing education in communities and planting bee-specific forage, to using innovation and technology to help protect and ensure bee health in B.C.

“The person I supported was using it to grab a few different queens and evaluate them, as well as get some hive scales,” said Iain Glass, a beekeeper who has supported Prince George based grants in the past.

The last round of projects included electronic monitoring of hives, construction of a bee barn for winter, and monitoring native wildflower lawns.

“I hope that there’s education […] it’s a very very strong opinion I had before I embarked on the project, it has only served to fortify the requirement that, without education, there’s no point.”

“Education is the cornerstone, and I hope applicants use it for education and equipment!” he explained.

Bee BC is a four-year, $400,000 provincial program that makes $100,000 of these funds available to projects investing in bee health each fiscal year.
