HARTLEY’S SPORTS SHORTS: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25th

WHL: (PG Cougars)

The Prince George Cougars have four games in five days starting with a doubleheader against the (25-26-2-3) Kelowna Rockets tonight and Wednesday at CN Centre.

The Rockets are 14 points ahead of the Cougars in the standings and have a win and a shootout loss in two games since Kris Mallette replaced the fired Adam Foote as head coach.

Kelowna is 5-1 against P.G. this season with the last victory coming on December 30th, 3-2 in overtime.

The (17-31-3-4) Cougars are 12 points behind the (23-28-4-3) Seattle Thunderbirds for the last WHL Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George has 13 games remaining (including six at home) and Seattle has 10 left (including five at home).

The Cougars are coming off Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Seattle as Josh Maser scored at 4:41 of overtime.

NHL:

Vancouver Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom is out indefinitely due to a knee injury.

There are reports he will be sidelined at least two to four weeks.

In a swap of third-string goalies, the Canucks acquired Louis Domingue from the New Jersey Devils for Zane McIntyre.

Domingue will back-up rookie netminder Thatcher Demko in Markstrom’s absence.

The (33-22-6) Canucks are in the east to play four road games in six nights starting this evening (4:00 PT) in Montreal.

The (29-27-8) Habs are six points behind Toronto for a playoff spot.

Vancouver will also visit Ottawa Thursday, Toronto Saturday and Columbus Sunday.

The Canucks are 3rd in the Pacific Division, one point behind Edmonton, four back of Vegas and two ahead of Calgary and Arizona.

There are 13 Tuesday games in the NHL with all seven Canadian teams in action.

The Alberta teams are on the road with Edmonton at Anaheim and Calgary at Boston.

There were 31 deals on the Feb. 24th NHL trade deadline day but no blockbusters.

Ottawa sent its leading scorer Jean-Gabriel Pageau to the NY Islanders for first, second and third-round draft picks.

Pageau has signed a six-year contract extension with the Islanders worth $5 million a season.

The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired 40-year-old forward Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks for a 3rd-round draft pick.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings battle the Trail Smoke Eaters in a best-of-seven BCHL Interior Division first-round series.

In the 2-3-2 format, the first two games will be played in Trail on Friday and Saturday night.

The series shifts to P.G. for games three and four Monday and Tuesday (March 2nd and 3rd) and a fifth game, if needed on Thursday (March 5th).

Should a 6th and 7th game be required that is scheduled for Trail on Saturday and Sunday, March 7th and 8th.

The defending champion Spruce Kings finished last in the Mainland Division and 15th out of 17 in the overall league standings with a record of 18-32-3-5.

The (36-17-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters placed second in the Interior Division with 33 more points than Prince George.

Trail won all three of the regular-season meetings between the two teams, 3-0 on Sept. 28th, 7-4 on Oct. 5th. and 9-2 on Jan 29th.

Forward Nick Poisson of the PG Spruce Kings is one of three finalists for the BCHL Most Sportsmanlike award.

Poisson led the Spruce Kings in scoring with 47 points (21 goals) to go along with 20 penalty minutes in 49 games.

Winners of the 2019-20 BCHL awards will be announced this week.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1)

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season with home games against the (12-23-3) North Island Silvertips Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

The (25-10-2-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league, a point behind the (27-9) Vancouver NE Chiefs, two back of the (26-9-1-2) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, and three behind the second-place (27-9-1-1) Vancouver NW Hawks.

North Island will finish in 8th place, earning the final playoff.

Curling:

The Tim Hortons Brier will begin this weekend in Kingston, Ontario.

B.C. is represented by 9-time provincial champion Jim Cotter and his team from the Okanagan.

Cotter will play his first game Saturday (11 a.m. PT) against the North West Territories.

Prince George continues to prepare to host the World Women’s Curling Championship on March 14th-22nd.

13 teams are entered with the opening draw at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14th.

The first game for Canada will go at  7:00 p.m. on March 14th against Scotland.

There are three draws a day from March 15th to 20th that run at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Semifinals will be played on March 21st at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. with the Medal games to follow on Sunday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Canada will be represented by 32-year-old Kerri Einarson and her Manitoba team from the Gimli Curling Club.

Manitoba beat Ontario’s Rachel Homan in the final of the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw 8-7 in an extra end.

NBA:

The top two teams in the NBA Eastern Conference tip-off tonight in Toronto (4:30 PT).

The (42-15) Raptors, who have won 17 of their last 18 games, host the (49-8) Milwaukee Bucks.

Jr. Basketball Provincials:

The PGSS Polars are 1-3 after an 85-70 loss to Belmont Monday at the Jr. Boys basketball provincials in Langley.

Prince George will play its 5th and last game of the tournament this afternoon at 2:00 against Dover Bay.

In earlier results: the Polars lost 77-53 to Enver Creek, they beat Charles Hayes 75-44 and they fell to Oak Bay 78-54.

32 teams are competing.

The Langley Events Centre is also the site for Jr. Girls basketball provincials which will begin Wednesday and continue until Saturday.

24 teams, including College Heights and Duchess Park, are entered.

BC Winter Games:

Cariboo-North East athletes finished 4th out of 8 in medals with 53 and third in gold with 21 at the BC Winter Games in Fort St. John.

North-West ended up last with 10 medals, including one gold.

More than 1,000 athletes between the ages of 9 and 17 years competed in 15 different sports.
