Exploration place, Lheidli T’enneh elder honored with local history award

Nearly 90 people came out to the 35th annual Jeanne Clarke Awards at the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum, hosted by the Prince George Public Library Board this week.

The Exploration place and Lheidli T’enneh elder, the late Mary Gouchie, were given the Jeanne Clarke Local History Award.

The honorees were recognized for the in-house exhibit Mary Gouchie: Hubodulh’eh, which focused on language revitalization.

Before her death last year, Gouchie was working to revitalize and recover the Lheidli T’enneh dialect of Dakelh by helping document the written and spoken language.

“Mary was such a special person and her passion and commitment to language revitalization, culture and family was inspiring,” said Museum Curator, Alyssa Leier.

Great-Granddaughter Elissa Gagnon was one of the family members on-hand to accept the award on Mary’s behalf.

“Mary exemplified the role that Elders can play in sharing, preserving and teaching through oral histories and traditional ways of knowing; she was
generous with her time and her instruction and we were thrilled to be able to share some of that with the entire community,”  added Tracy Calogheros, CEO of the Exploration Place.

The Jeanne Clarke Award is presented annually for outstanding contributions in the preservation of local and regional history in the categories of Publication and Service.
