WHL: (PG Cougars)

Kelowna Rockets  5  Prince George Cougars 4   (Wednesday)

The Rockets overcame a 4-3 third period deficit thanks to Matthew Wedman, who scored twice, 2:17 apart.

The 20-year-old Wedman tied the game with 5:23 left and added the winner with 3:06 remaining before 1,763 fans at CN Centre.

Cole Moberg put the Cougars ahead when he tallied his second goal of the game at 6:57 of the 3rd.

Kelowna is 7-1 against P.G. this season.

The (17-32-4-4) Cougars are 11 points behind the (23-28-4-3) Seattle Thunderbirds for the last WHL Western Conference wild-card spot.

Prince George has 11 games remaining (including four at home) and Seattle has 10 left (including five at home).

The Cougars play a home-and-home against the BC Division-leading Blazers, Friday in P.G. and Saturday in Kamloops.

BCHL: (PG Spruce Kings)

The Prince George Spruce Kings battle the Trail Smoke Eaters in a best-of-seven BCHL Interior Division first-round series.

In the 2-3-2 format, the first two games will be played in Trail on Friday and Saturday night.

The series shifts to P.G. for games three and four Monday and Tuesday and a fifth game, if needed on Thursday (March 5th).

Should a 6th and 7th game be required that is scheduled for Trail on Saturday and Sunday, March 7th and 8th.

The defending champion Spruce Kings finished last in the Mainland Division and 15th out of 17 in the overall league standings with a record of 18-32-3-5.

The (36-17-2-2-1) Smoke Eaters placed second in the Interior Division with 33 more points than Prince George.

Trail won all three of the regular-season meetings between the two teams, 3-0 on Sept. 28th, 7-4 on Oct. 5th. and 9-2 on Jan 29th.

The Schedule for the series is as follows:

The Spruce Kings leading scorer Nick Poisson was a runner-up for the BCHL Most Sportsmanlike award that was won by Kent Johnson of Trail.

Johnson, who won the scoring title with 101 points (41 goals) in 52 games, was also voted the league’s MVP.

Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning announced on Wednesday that goalie Jacob Markstrom will be re-evaluated in two weeks after he underwent a minor lower-body procedure.

Markstrom suffered what appeared to be a knee injury on Saturday against Boston.

He had an MRI in Montreal on Monday.

Thatcher Demko will continue to fill in as the team’s starter with Louis Domingue the backup.

The Canucks visit the Ottawa Senators (4:30 p.m. PT) in one of 10 NHL games tonight.

The (21-31-12) Senators have the third-worst record in the league only ahead of LA and Detroit.

The (34-22-6) Canucks are 1-0 on a four-game Eastern trip that also takes them to Toronto Saturday and Columbus Sunday.

Vancouver is tied with Edmonton for 2nd in the Pacific Division, four points behind Vegas and two points ahead of Calgary.

Edmonton is the only Canadian team idle this evening.

Calgary plays in Nashville, Winnipeg hosts Washington, Toronto is at Florida and Montreal entertains NY Rangers.

St. Louis Blues defenceman Jay Bouwmeester has announced he won’t play again this season as he continues to recover from a cardiac episode.

The 36-year-old Bouwmeester collapsed on the team’s bench during a game on Feb. 11th in Anaheim.

BCMML: (Cariboo Cougars at Kin 1)

The Cariboo Cougars will conclude their regular season with home games against the (12-23-3) North Island Silvertips Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Kin 1.

The (25-10-2-1) Cougars are in 5th place in the 11-team league, a point behind the (27-9) Vancouver NE Chiefs, two back of the (26-9-1-2) Fraser Valley Thunderbirds, and three behind the second-place (27-9-1-1) Vancouver NW Hawks.

North Island will finish in 8th place, earning the final playoff.

High School Basketball:

The Langley Events Centre is hosting the provincial high school girls basketball championships until Saturday.

Duchess Park is 1-0 in 3A Girls (68-58 win over G.W. Graham) to advance to the quarterfinals against Abbotsford this afternoon at 12:30.

College Heights is 1-1 and Duchess Park 0-2 in Jr Girls.

PGSS is 0-1 in 4A Girls.

Nechako Valley is 0-1 in 2A Girls.

PGSS finished with a 1-4 record in Jr Boys.

 

Curling:

The Tim Hortons Brier will begin this weekend in Kingston, Ontario.

B.C. is represented by 9-time provincial champion Jim Cotter and his team from the Okanagan.

Cotter will play his first game Saturday (11 a.m. PT) against the North West Territories.

Prince George continues to prepare to host the World Women’s Curling Championship on March 14th-22nd.

13 teams are entered with the opening draw at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14th.

The first game for Canada will go at  7:00 p.m. on March 14th against Scotland.

There are three draws a day from March 15th to 20th that run at 9:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Semifinals will be played on March 21st at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. with the Medal games to follow on Sunday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Canada will be represented by 32-year-old Kerri Einarson and her Manitoba team from the Gimli Curling Club.

 

Tennis:

5-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement from tennis at age 32.

While dealing with a shoulder injury, Sharapova has lost the last four matches she played at major tournaments.

 

NBA:

The Toronto Raptors host the (19-38) Charlotte Hornets Friday (4:30 PT).

The (42-16) Raptors are 2nd in the Conference and have won 17 of their last 19 games.
