Changes to promote transparency in lobbying coming this May

Sections of 2018’s B.C. Lobbyists Registration Amendment Act that have not yet come into effect will be coming into force on May 4th.

The hope is that the planned amendments act will increase transparency in lobbying. All lobbyists will be affected by the new legislation.

Currently, organizations that have lobbied under 100 hours in the previous 12 months are not required to register in the Lobbyist Registry. However, under the new legislation the 100-hour threshold will be removed, resulting in more organizations being required to register.

Additionally, there will be an introduction of monthly returns, meaning that Lobbyists will need to submit reports to the registry and include all lobbying activities undertaken in the previous month.
