For the Northern Interior, commercial power consumption was down 5%, while residential increased by 8%.

This trend is reflected province-wide, with residential use up 11%, while commercial properties are using 4% less electricity.

Some of the shift can be attributed to many businesses allowing staff to work from home, as well as physical distancing measures implemented by many British Columbians who are choosing to spend less time out of the house.

However, the timing of school breaks and yearly weather trends are also influencing factors.

Earlier this week BC Hydro began accepting applications to provide relief to customers adversely affected by COVID-19.

Tips to reduce residential power consumption can be found on BC Hydro’s website.
