The Upper Fraser East snow basin is still the largest concern when it comes to potential flooding throughout the province, especially around Prince George.
“Upper Fraser East’s May 1st snow basin index is 143% of normal, and that’s a slight decrease from April 1st’s measure which was 147% of normal,” explained Johnathan Boyd, Hydrologist with the BC River Forecast Centre.
Boyd said that a relatively dry April led to a slight decrease in snow-pack.
However, numbers have still not returned to March’s more moderate levels.
The Upper Fraser East basin poses some flood risks:
“We did have that slight warm spell around the third week of April, and that led to some localized flooding in areas surrounding Prince George.”
“For now I would say it’s not the best situation, the snow-pack is still high,”
The risk of flooding can change quickly based on weather, and Boyd’s advice was simple: “be aware, and watch weather forecasts.”
