Winter Games—February 24th

Justin Hampole of Prince George is in second place in a field of 11 skaters after the figure skating short program in pre-novice men. Hampole skated clean with what he described as the best performance of his life. “That was amazing. I loved it so much. I feel like the cheering from the crowd, it was so loud and it fueled my program. It made me accelerate with my speed on the ice. It was amazing,” said the 13-year-old Hampole, who added his goal is to earn a medal. 10-year-old Stephen Gogolov of Toronto has the lead in pre-novice men while Beres Clements of Gibsons is 3rd. The free skate goes Wednesday beginning at 10:15am.

–Figure skating today at Lakewood Dental Kin 1 arena includes female novice singles (10:45am) and male novice singles (6:15pm).

–The BC men’s hockey team is 1-1 after a 5-2 loss to Manitoba. Dorrin Luding of Prince George took the loss in goal, stopping 16 of 20 shots. (The last Manitoba goal went into an empty net). Luding’s teammate with the Cariboo Cougars, Justin Almeida, notched one assist for BC to give him three points in two games. BC will continue round robin play tonight at 7:30 against 2-0 Ontario. (BC won its opener 5-3 over New Brunswick)

—BC, skipped by Sarah Daniels of North Delta, is 2-0 in women’s curling outscoring Nunavut 10-3 and the North West Territories 8-1. BC meets Yukon at 10am today, PEI at 10am Wednesday, Ontario at 4pm Wednesday and Saskatchewan Thursday at 9am in round robin play at the PG Golf and Curling Club.

–B.C.’s para cross country skiers won a pair of gold and a silver medal in Monday’s competition. Emily Suchy of Revelstoke took gold in the 2.5km sit-ski event. Her teammate Andy Lin of Burnaby also won gold in the 2.5km standing classic para male event. North Vancouver’s Emily Weekes earned silver in the 2.5km standing classic para female race.

–Cross country ski classic sprint races are featured today at Otway (starting at 10am).

–It’s day two of table tennis at Duchess Park with action in singles, doubles and team competition.

–Individual and team squash resumes today at the Northern Sport Centre. BC won its first two female team matches and its opener in male team squash.

–Also at the Northern Sport Centre, it’s day two of badminton with singles and doubles competition.

–Individual trampoline begins today at CNC. Snowboarding (parallel giant slalom at Purden) and Synchronized Swimming (PG Aquatic Centre) also gets going today while judo takes to the mat Wednesday at the Northern Sport Centre.

–After Monday’s competition, BC remains third in medals with 44 (14G, 17S, 13B). Quebec has a massive lead with 87 (36G, 24S, 27B) with Ontario second with 49 (18G, 18S, 13B).
