Winter Games—February 25

The BC men’s hockey team finished round robin play at the Canada Winter Games with a 1-2 record after a 6-4 loss to Ontario before an estimated crowd of 2,000 at CN Centre. Justin Almeida of the Cariboo Cougars picked up an assist in a losing cause to give him four points in three games. Ontario finished first in Pool A at 3-0. Manitoba was next at 2-1 with BC third. (Dorrin Luding of Prince George is one of two goalies on the BC team)

–Men’s hockey quarter-finals begin Thursday including BC against Quebec (7:30 at Kin 2). Quebec finished second in Pool B with a 2-1 record behind 3-0 Alberta.

UPDATE—Justin Hampole of Prince George won bronze today
in pre-novice men figure skating.

–13-year-old Justin Hampole of PG will compete in the figure skating pre-novice men free skate that begins at 10:15 this morning at Lakewood Dental Kin 1 arena. Hampole is in second place (field of 11) after the short program. 10-year-old Stephen Gogolov of Toronto has the lead while Beres Clements of Gibsons is 3rd.

UPDATE—-BC’s Sarah Daniels won 9-3 over PEI to improve her record to 4-0.

–BC, skipped by Sarah Daniels of North Delta, is 3-0 in women’s curling following a 10-2 victory over Yukon. Daniels has outscored her opponent by a total of 28-6. BC meets PEI at 10am today, Ontario at 4pm today and Saskatchewan Thursday at 9am in round robin action.

–BC captured gold in cross country skiing and four other medals in para cross country ski on Tuesday. Colin Ferrie of Kimberly crossed the finish line first in the 1.5 km classic sprint.

–Para cross country skiers earned a gold, two silver and a bronze. Revelstoke’s Emily Suchy won her second gold medal, this time in the 800m sit-ski sprint. Emily Weekes of North Vancouver won her second silver in the 1.2km standing sprint. Burnaby’s Andy Lin can now add a silver medal to his gold medal from Monday; Lin was second in the 1.2km standing sprint. Pemberton skier Ethan Hess, 15, won his first Canada Winter Games medal in the 800m sit-ski event, he finished in third place.
Cross Country skiing resumes Thursday at Otway with the mass start races.

–Neither Meryeta O’dine, Evan Bichon or Dawson Ellery of PG qualified for the snowboard elimination round
quarter-finals in the parallel slalom at Purden.
Snowboarding continues Friday with the slope style and will conclude Saturday with the snow cross at Tabor Mountain.

–Winter Games judo begins today at the Northern Sport Centre. Lavanna Laass (-63 kgs) and Grace Northrop (-52kgs) of the Hart Judo Club take to the mat this afternoon at 1 while Kristen Yawney -70kgs) of the PG Judo Club competes Thursday. The team competition is on Saturday.

BC won two bronze today in badminton: James Ho of Surrey (singles male) and Joshua Liu and Duncan Yao of the Lower Mainland (doubles male).

–BC’s badminton players are competing today in three bronze medal games at the Northern Sport Centre. James Ho (singles male), Qingzi Ouyang (singles female), and the team of Joshua Liu and Duncan Yao will compete for the bronze in the doubles male event.

–Winter Games competition continues today in table tennis at Duchess Park, squash at the Northern Sport Centre, trampoline at CNC and synchronized swimming at the PG Aquatic Centre.

–After winning 5 cross country ski medals Tuesday, Team BC is in third place with 49 medals (16G, 19S, 14B). Quebec leads with 97 (39G, 27S, 31B) with Ontario second with 56 (21G, 21S, 14B). Alberta is 4th with 44 (8G, 16S, 20B).

–The 2015 National Ski Cross Championships have been awarded to Tabor Mountain March 16-19. The decision comes after Tabor successfully hosted ski cross racers at the Canada Winter Games.
