City to close section of Carney street to install water main for new fire hall

The City of Prince George will be closing a section of Carney street to all vehicular and pedestrian access between Winnipeg Street and Ellison Drive this Monday (June 8) starting at 7 am.

City crews will be installing a water main connection for the new fire hall, currently under construction.

The traffic disruption is expected to take about one week.

Carney Street is expected to be reopened by the morning of June 14.

Tuesday morning (June 9), the water service will be shut off for about five hours as part of the operation.

Residences and businesses are advised to run their tap water until its clear if they experience cloudy water.

All residences and businesses in the affected area have been notified of the impending closure.

During construction, northbound motorists traveling on Massey Drive who are attempting to turn west onto Carney Street will be required to detour north via 17th Avenue, Spruce Street, and 15th Avenue.

Southbound motorists traveling on Carney Street attempting to reach the intersection of Carney Street and Winnipeg Street must detour via 15th Avenue.

Traffic signs will be in place to direct the public.

The new fire hall, on Massey Drive, will be approximately 50% larger than Fire Hall #1, which it will replace, and have the capacity to house a modern Emergency Operations Centre and Fire Operations Communications Centre.
